Does anyone else find the odd use of English in Indian films odd? Sometimes half a sentence is in Hindi and the other half in English which i just find weird.

I have not seen any Indian movie in over ten years but that is how most of the people in urban India speak in everyday life. In my school (it was a catholic school) we were fined for speaking in Hindi except in Hindi class. I paid 5 Rs for getting caught speaking in Hindi on two occasions. So most people would learn an OK English but at home parents speak in Hindi so most of the people who grew up in 90s or later have developed a habit of mixing Hindi and English. I was very poor in both English and Hindi and in fact barely passed in Hindi in my Matric exam.

Interesting, thanks for the insight Aj.
I'm watching Dil Chahta Hai as we speak and it's far more noticeable which led me to wonder why

Dil Chahta if I recall may be about 12 years old movie. The thing you are talking about will be more apparent in that movie as it was probably targeted at English speaking class of India but in the coming years you could see this trend more pervasive as now a days even the cheaper schools pay attention to English and at least in urban areas almost all kids get to learn English. When last time I was in India about 3 years ago I came across people in metros who speak only in English in their daily lives.

I have a Cable Channel called ZEETV which is Indian programming and I looked in on a Singing competition and was surprised to find that both Contestants and Judges all spoke in part English and part Hindu. Clearly it must be common practice. It did seem somewhat strange to hear it.
