13 Hitchcock MacGuffins *
01. In PSYCHO - the $40,000 Marion Crane (Janet Leigh) steals from her employer 02. In NORTH BY NORTHWEST - The microfilm the bad guys are trying to take out of the country 03. In NOTORIOUS - the Uranium ore Devlin and Alicia (Cary Grant and Ingrid Bergman) find in wine bottles 04. In THE 39 STEPS - the Air Defence secrets memorised by Mr Memory 05. In THE LADY VANISHES - the coded message in the folk song Miss Froy has memorized 06. In REBECCA - Mrs. Danvers' coldness 07. Two MacGuffins in VERTIGO. James Stewart's conversation about a pink bra, and his testing of his vertigo on a chair. The former is pointless, and everyone knows the latter will fail. 08. In FAMILY PLOT, Blanche's search for the missing heir. 09. TORN CURTAIN - The encounter with the exiled Polish countess Kuchinska (Lila Kedrova) who leads the fugitives to the post office is really irrelevant. 10. THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH - The plot to assassinate a foreign statesman.
* A MacGuffin is an object or goal used to drive the plot and create narrative tension, but which, in and of itself, is usually of little significance to the audience.

CHARADE - Cary Grant showering with clothes on. alfromniCharade isn't a Hitchcock film; it was directed by Stanley Donen. You might have been thinking of North by Northwest. * A MacGuffin is an object or goal used to drive the plot and create narrative tension, but which, in and of itself, is usually of little significance to the audience. mattgarth -- In the Hitchcock version of "The 39 Steps" when does a hotel appear? Hannay lives in residential property/house, and later stays in a Scottish rural inn with the girl, but no hotel, or have I missed something?

mattgarth -- In the Hitchcock version of "The 39 Steps" when does a hotel appear? Hannay lives in residential property/house, and stays in a Scottish inn with the girl, but no hotel, or have I missed something? Isn't the inn that Hannay and Pamela check into considered a 'hotel?' One of the Professor's men even inquires of the innkeeper if this place is a hotel. If that is considered a problem, then let's substitute the hotel that Iris and friends are staying at in THE LADY VANISHES.

mattgarth --- An inn in the UK is not conisderred as an hotel, unless specifically named as such (e.g. "Holiday Inn"). An inn is a pub with just a couple or so spare bedrooms, for wayward travellers etc., especially so in the time-frame of the movie.

A fine line, I must say. But I'll defer and substitute LADY VANISHES -- an honest-to-goodness middle European hotel instead.
