Hey can someone answer this for me? I've always wondered, why were people so put off by Carrey playing such a dark role in this, but no one cared when he played a dark role in Batman Forever? Was it because the Riddler was already an established character?

If Tim Burton was directing it Riddler would come off darker.

Nygma actually killed his boss while Chip never took it that far. Maybe because we expect that behavior from a comic book villain while Chip felt a little too real and uncomfortable for some.

Yeah I think you're right. He was a superhero movie villain so people went into it with built-in expectations.

I like it to an extent, but I completely understand why it isn't considered a good movie.
My problem with it is that every character is completely unlikable and the overall movie is just too depressing and distasteful imo. Matthew Broderick's character is even less likeable than Jim Carrey's character and this is a serious problem. Not only that, but his reactions to the situations in the movie aren't funny and they should be.

Because people weren’t sure on what it was trying to be I felt. I especially had that problem. Was it a comedy with just a very creepy Jim Carrey or was it a horror movie with comedy elements?

I do like the movie, but it never really could decide what it wanted to be. One minute it was What About Bob?, the next it was Strangers on a Train.

That movie was TRASHED when it was released, quickly got the reputation that it was "so bad, it must be seen". I never thought it was THAT bad, but I didn't think it was all that good either. Haven't seen it in a long time, maybe I'll think differently with a new viewing.
