I realize that in this era of Netflix and streaming, the DVD is going the way of the BetaMax.
However, since i recently received a DVD player as a gift, I would love to collect discs of my favorite classic movies, as well as those of the TV shows I grew up on.
It's sad that Blockbuster Video went under many years ago. BTW, on the subject of videos, does anyone know where I could unload the collection of VHS tapes that I had acquired over many years?
DAMN modern technology! It's impossible to keep up with!
Online is the best way, like Amazon, or if you have Half Price Books you can find plenty there in a physical storefront. A lot of charitable groups resell DVD's as well like Goodwill or Salvation Army. Those are good ways to pick up movies on DVD cheaply. The selection can be hit and miss though.
Speaking of which, those same charitable organizations will take your VHS tapes. The local Goodwill near my house has a huge collection. If any of them were fairly rare I might pick them up but just about all of them are commonly found titles.
As far as a brick and mortar location to buy new DVD's, Barnes & Noble seems to have the best selection, including a large number of Criterion Collection titles. A lot of used bookstores carry them, too.

Thank you, vegalyra. I live in NYC; are there any Goodwill stations here?
Also, if I'm going to spend $$$ on DVD's, I want them to be in pristine condition. I guess I'll try Amazon. I've received a lot of good stuff from them.

I'm not that familiar with your area, but I imagine so. They are located in most states as far as I know. Yes, if you want unused, pristine copies, Amazon or Deep Discount are good options.
Honestly, I would have thought that regular DVD packaging, would have stopped being manufactured about five years ago, in favor of Blu-ray/DVD Combo packs... But No... They are still being produced.
I just picked up a brand new title on DVD this morning at Walmart...
Blu-Ray players can play DVDs... And yet, you can still buy Brand New DVD Players at the stores!
But, If DVDs are going the way of the BetaMax... Then It must be someplace where I don't live, because I see DVDs everywhere!

Yes, I thought it was bizarre when I saw a stand alone DVD of Blade Runner 2049 at B&N the other day. An effects generated film like that needs to be at least 1080P...

For new and used, eBay has been a good source for me. Do watch out for those selling bootlegs, as the quality can be horrible.
I have over 1000 DVDs and blu-rays. I still have my VHS tapes, as well as about 500 laserdiscs.
Being a classic film lover has been tough trying to be satisfied with streaming services. FilmStruck is trying to satisfy that need, but one still has to maintain a private collection, as many of my favorites are not going to show up anywhere. If I want to watch THE BEAST WITH FIVE FINGERS or MADAME BUTTERFLY with Sylvia Sidney and Cary Grant, I would have a hard time locating those online.

I like DVDs because you can take them with you when on a plane and Greyhound. Best buy, Target, Barnes and Noble for walk-in stores. Amazon and Shout! Are also good.
let it go let it go let your love open da door...
as my 3 1/2 year old niece sings it. much better message.

Linda-- I haven't been too impressed with FilmStruck yet. BUT I am hopeful that they will have a great future by uploading more Criterion movies. What I see on FilmStuck right now may be the "beginning of a beautiful relationship." I see the beginning of plan, but so far, I don't see much content.
I like the way they have organized their searches by directors and actors/actresses. But, they have a long way to go with Fred Zinnemann, for example. Once they start filling in their structure with content...........
BTW, Does anyone know how to collect Fred Zinnemann's shorts? Looking at his filmography, he did a lot of shorts before he broke into feature films.
...here's a tip...I purchase used DVD's for $1 to $2 apiece at a place in the US Midwest called Half Priced Books. The neat thing is that you can inspect the disk to assure it is not scratched or damaged before buying it. For example, I purchased a perfect condition copy of Avatar for $1. Avatar is a film I would never have seen otherwise. I have acquired many classic films in the same manner. I will probably never spend list price on a DVD ever again.

Warner archive has been a good source of hard to find titles . The made on order dvds are pretty barebones but perfectly acceptable. I use amazone UK to get some hard to find titles. Like Neuro, I maintain my large collection of VHS and dvds even as I switch to Apple TV and Netflix. Too many films came out in the glory days of vhs that have never made it to dvd. Now they are making it harder to buy films on Apple TV. I like to own .
The best purchase I ever made was an all region DVD player. $50 on Amazon, small , lightweight, easy to transport if I want to show something at another venue, and I can play videos from anywhere in The world.
I can’t believe NYC doesn’t have some fabulous second hand store known to the in crowd.
Anyone can start an insane asylum with an empty room and the right kind of people

well, if it was known to the in crowd why would just anyone know about it?
try BOOK OFF. 55 w45th street. [ish]. i found this while going to the dress barn on the next block. that pizza place isn't that bad, either.
five below and other dollar ish stores are good for this, but you can't look up to see if they have what you are looking for.

You know, I find it very interesting that people frequently say things like that all the time about 'older' technology...
I really have to wonder if these beliefs just come from people who have never used it...
Many have said that about Vinyl Records...
When CDs... And MP3s... Came along...
But people are still buying them used...
And there are actually some companies making Brand New Vinyl Records... and a few are being sold inside major nationwide stores such as Target & Walmart...
Back in the olden days New York City had a 4 inch thick YELLOW PAGES book (free!) that listed businesses including thrift stores, record stores, video stores etc.
Perhaps the yellow pages books have also gone the way of the Betamax, VHS, "DVD" and the Dodo (which I seriously doubt) but there are yellow pages on-line. DVDs are readily available in the middle of no-where without having to seek them out as are used VHSs galore.
a wise man once said "If someone doesn't want responses to his/her posts, then s/he shouldn't post them. If someone wants specific users to not respond...well, that's too bad." (link)

They still exist...
I just ordered a FREE set... from AT&T... for my city... Dated 11-2017...
WHY? because it doesn't do any good to go online, if you ISP isn't functioning!
My ISP is different than my AT&T phone service... and a month ago, My ISP was down for several days due to that mega winter storm in the NE part of the USA, but my phone was working.
