He's right. You don't change the character or he'd become a different character. That's something they tried to teach us in the 90s with the Reign of the Supermen and Knight's Quest and the other "let's make these characters edgy" character switches they did. Like he said, don't change, but find that core that made people like the character in the 1st place and bring it to the forefront.
