Anybody remember this one? It's an independent film (produced by the Cannon Group, who apparently took a break from producing their usual assembly line action flicks) loosely based on the life of writer Charles Bukowski. Mickey Rourke plays Henry Chinaski, an alcoholic writer/poet living on skid row in Los Angeles. It seems he has a chance to move upscale when a publishing company buys one of his short stories, but decides he prefers the comfort of his seedy surroundings.
Sometimes dreary and depressing, Barfly is definitely not without it's charm. It's also humorous and contains some amusing scenes. Good location work and set design as well. Rourke gives a standout performance and gets great support from Faye Dunaway who plays his soul mate.
Quite the catfight between Dunaway and Alice Krige!

I remember I identified with the drunk poet barfly at the time. Liked the movie, could only see it once. Don't recall a "cat fight". I think Rourke was quite good.

apparently bukowski wasnt too pleased with rourke's performance. he wanted sean penn to do the role.

I saw it the day it came out and haven't seen it since. I remember really liking it but it's time to see it again. Does it still stand up? I just remember Henry saying, "Here's to all my friennnnds!"

My first thought was that it was "Barfi!" (2012). One of the few bollywoods I've seen that I liked. Have not seen Barfly so have no opinion there....

Interesting picture. I think my favourite Charles Bukowski movie so far is 'Factotum' (2005).

Can't believe someone actually remembers this movie--enjoyed it quite a bit back in 1987, have never seen it listed anywhere since

Interesting picture. I think my favourite Charles Bukowski movie so far is 'Factotum' (2005). TALES OF ORDINARY MADNESS with BEN GAZZARA was also pretty good. it had this really intense sex scene. but yes, FACTOTUM is the best i guess.

Then I caught it on TV on few days ago. Still think it's a great little flick.
