...early 1990's...Emmitt Smith was signing autos for $100 a pop. He didn't even make eye contact to the many suckers who paid.
At the same convention, I paid Joe Namath $5 for his auto and he was gracious and very friendly...

Never paid to get an autograph, and on the few occasions I've gone to Cons, I've not gone near those tables so took no notice of the prices.
Everything I've got I've got for free (apart from a few pieces from the second hand market), and I've got a lot of good stuff

I've heard Kel Mitchell from nickelodeon only wants 60 for a "Kelfie" and an Autograph together. I'll know later this month. I just hope he'll autograph the good burger DVD instead of a photo.
His "all that" co-star Josh Server gave away autographs for free back in 2011 if you sent a letter asking for one.

In fairness, I get why someone would be willing to pay such astronomical prices. I mean how often do you get the chance to meet a famous celebrity? It may be your one and only time so you might as well make the most of it even though it will cost you plenty. But I can certainly understand why it would be ludicrous to pay. I mean I wouldn't want to pay such a high cost.

...speculate: I purchased an entire set of 1985/86 basketball cards for $7 in 1986. The set includes (among many other superstars of the day) a Michael Jordan rookie card. It was the best $7 I've ever spent, and I still have the entire set intact.

plus it can even be something you can invest into and speculate on. What do you mean? some of the signatures increase in value over time. some dramatically…
