Yeah Razor sounds kinda like the property Hollywood would avoid or water down. Because they want to reach that PG-13 rating so they can get as many butts in the seats as possible. Television would love it though. The problem with TV is they would cut it down too much too whereas if they make it a film they could go for a hard R rating or even an X rating which Rob said wasn't out of the question and the great thing about 'Razor' is it has something going for it that a lot of other female superhero movies haven't and that is studios that believe it will be successful and they have already signed it up to be a franchise and have a spinoff of 'Strike' (Razor's sister) in development and we might also get spinoffs of Shi and Poizon who also spun off 'Razor.' 'Shi' was the biggest spinoff to come from 'Razor' and a number of other series spunoff Shi later including 'Witchblade' and Sara's very first appearance in a comic book series was in a 'Shi/ Cyblade' spinoff. I think Razor can win a lot of fans of 'The Crow' over 'cause it is similar but more violent and 'Razor' goes further with the Horror elements and has a lot of different monsters and not just human criminals and she become a vampire and werewolf at various times in the comic books. Got any links Deb? I'm too lazy to google and my comp craps out on a lot of the entertainment sites, all I could see right now is from Wiki which literally just says Emma Dummont is going to be the lead character and Rob Cohen is writing and directing, but that's all they say about it or anything else.
And I dunno TV can do it just as good, sure this is the budget it was tagged with back in 2010 but $15 isn't a lot of money for a film really, you get it on a HBO or something and they can give enough of a budget to do close to what a film can for that much, plus comic series are better suited for TV due to the episodic nature of things, the problem films always face is knowing what to cut out, what to trim down and what to ignore from the comics when adapting stuff.
Also you get a HBO and the maturity, gore, nudity or language don't need to be toned down, unless were talking full on penetration in which case, ok yeah that they wont show but otherwise it's all fair game, same for Netflix of any other streaming service.
But just because a studio is behind it, which one BTW? doesn't matter unless their shooting the films back to back or at the same time, because the Dark Universe, the DCEU and Power Rangers all had their studios behind them to make over half a dozen movies before The Mummy flopped, BVS disappointed and Power Rangers bombed, also depending on the budget and size of the studio a flop let alone a bomb can kill a studio depending on their size and the budget just look at Open Road/Global Road who just filed for bankruptcy this year.

Yeah. I have read a few articles about the ‘Razor’ movie on Google News since it was first announced Rob Cohen was directing it and I will post a few of them below and ‘Razor’ is being produced by Jeff Most who was the producer of ‘The Crow’ and ‘Number 11 Films’ is fully financing and handling worldwide sales and this will be their first under their partnership with Lotus Entertainment. Movie view which is a leading film publication is also co-producing the movie and has Greater China distribution rights and from what San Mu (of Movie View) has to say about Razor “it is an action packed, female driven revenge and redemption story with long term franchise potential and who better to be partnering with than Rob Cohen who has launched some of the most successful action franchises in history and Jeff Most who did such an amazing job with The Crow.” “We couldn’t be more excited to be co-producing the launch of the Razor franchise with such well-placed, experienced and knowledgeable Chinese production and marketing talent as San Mu and the rest of the team at Truth Fair Investment and Movie View International,” adds Jeff Most.”
I don’t know what the budget is going to be for ‘Razor’ but it may have changed since 2010 since the movie didn’t have Number 11 Films, Lotus Entertainment, Big Fish, Head Gear, Truth Fair Investment and Movie View involved in it before and it might also no longer be filmed here in Australia either. It is hard to tell ‘cause a lot has changed over the past 8 years but I would probably only count the things from when Rob Cohen was announced to be directing as still happening ‘cause they are more recent. This interview with him earlier this year is interesting and he speaks a lot about the ‘Razor’ movie and it was done before they cast Emma in the role but is worth a read. EXCLUSIVE! Rob Cohen Considering Either Anya Taylor-Joy or Hailee Steinfeld For RAZORI am looking forward to seeing 'Razor' and whether it is a hit or not remains to be seen 'cause it is not the type of comic book movie that is going to get a lot of children in attendance like the DC and Marvel movies do and I think that is good for the genre 'cause what comic book movies could use is some well needed diversity and we have a large amount of different genres in comic books and many are Horror, Fantasy, Romance and Sci Fi but all we have got for the past 20 years is light superhero movies and 'Razor' will be the first proper Horror superhero movie since 'Blade' and most likely the most violent since 'The Crow' movies and it is very different than anything DC or Marvel has done and goes into far out Horror territory which could benefit it 'cause it could get fans of both Horror and superhero movies going to see it. www.ramascreen.com/exclusive-rob-cohen-considering-either-anya-taylor-joy-or-hailee-steinfeld-for-razor/deadline.com/2018/06/the-gifted-emma-dumont-razor-comic-film-rob-cohen-1202416303/deadline.com/2017/11/razor-rob-cohen-movie-view-international-truth-fair-china-coproduction-afm-1202203319/comicbook.com/movies/2018/06/26/razor-movie-emma-dumont/www.bleedingcool.com/2018/06/25/emma-dumont-cast-rob-cohen-adaptation-razor/www.flickeringmyth.com/2017/05/rob-cohen-adapting-comic-book-series-razor-for-the-big-screen/

The comic book series had a reputation when it came out in the 90s for being one of the most controversial series of all time 'cause of all the violence, blood, guts and nudity in it and it was banned in stores in America but despite that it was still one of the biggest selling comic book series of the 90s and was outselling a number of DC and Marvel's biggest sellers at the time which was very impressive for an adult comic book series. An important thing people are going to have to remember with Razor is while it is a superhero series it is not one that is aimed at children and Razor swears her head off in the comic books and slashes guys heads and penises off, cuts their innards out and baths in people's blood. For those who thought 'The Crow' was dark 'Razor' goes even further and we have never had a comic book movie this graphic before or sexually explicit.

Why have they taken so long to make movies of adult comic book series? Instead of making comic books that are aimed at children more violent so they can get an adult audience to watch them they should just make more movies like Razor or let me guess, it is because they have women in leading roles? Once again little Blinky Bill has to have that hill or he'll go cryin' home to his parents.

We got a movie of 'Blue is the Warmest colour' which was based on the 'Blue Angel' graphic novel by Julie Maroh and was sexually graphic and 'The Crow', 'The Mask', 'Faust', 'Atomic Blonde', '30 Days of Night', 'Barb Wire' and 'From Hell' were all based on adult comic books and graphic novels but they haven't adapted a lot of the biggest selling ones and the ultraviolent ones yet and 'Spawn' is going to be the first one that doesn't hold back and isn't watered down like the 90s movie was and Todd McFarlane has said it is going to be the first of its kind and is hoping it kicks off its own Horror Superhero genre which is exactly what I would love to see 'cause too many Horror superheroes have yet to have their chance on screen and there have been way too many light comic book movies and a number of the ones that were supposed to be really dark and violent were made into Action Comedy movies like 'The Mask' which I liked but is nothing like it was originally meant to be and it is time we get more blood, guts and monsters and demons in the comic book movie genre. Bring on the Horror!!

Once again little Blinky Bill has to have that hill or he'll go cryin' home to his parents. Though sexism probably plays some part in this most likely issues are that the kid friendly comics have been around longer meaning they have generational appeal which some of the early rated R comics are only now getting old enough to have, you know Superman has fans alive who read his original comics as they came out, 2nd rated R material historically doesn't make the same money as PG-13, look at all the billion dollar films not a one is rated higher than PG-13, then theres also merch, if the audience is smaller so is the marketplace for merch, and older fans may theoretically be the ones more likely to drop a few hundred a couple of times a year for some big set or expensive replica stuff it's the army of kids who get their parents to drop $2-10 a day on related merch and also gets them to drop a few hundred for B-Days and X-Mas on cheaper but fancy looking toys where the money is.
Also easier to make the kid stuff more adult without breaking limits, sex and violence is ingrained in superhero DNA just as long as they show no nudity or excessive blood you can indulge in those elements to make adults enjoy stuff and it's easy.
Plus as I have mentioned many times their audiences are vastly different in size, you take the best selling harder comics and figure out the regular readership numbers for their lifetime and they at best are on par with low to middling animated kid shows singular first airing in the US, you add in multiple countries showing the shows, them being in syndication globally, on Hulu or Netyflix or now on the DCU, and an animated kids show has far greater penetration than the comics, you then figure in the penetration to the mainstream consciousness for the live action shows and though their comic sales pale in comparison the kid appealing comic characters are far better known, which means far bigger movie potential.
Also helps that DC & Marvel are owned by major studios meaning they don't need to sell the movie rights, so theres no disputes with the owner of the IP about how to make the movie or how much they want, you know vastly more issues at play than just the lead character doesn't have a penis.

I kinda agree with Dazz on this one. Comic books were actually originally created for adults and there were a number of Horror, Crime, Drama, Romance and Suspense series that predated the Superhero genre but the Superhero genre helped skyrocket the sales of comic books and kids liked them so the comic book companies decided to focus more on superheroes and after complaints from concerned parents the ‘Comics Code Authority’ was formed in 1954 and made them more kid friendly. Some of the earlier Horror comic books were full of violence, blood and guts and were one of the inspirations for Horror legends like Stephen King, Wes Craven and John Carpenter but the genre took a hit when the Comic Code of Authority started deeming them too violent, offensive and graphic for children and banned them from being released and it wasn't until the late 80s things changed and many writers got the freedom to have whatever they wanted to have in comic books which saw a big change in the comic books coming out in the late 80s and especially the 90s.
R rated material isn't going to have the same success at the Box Office as G and PG Rated superhero movies 'cause it won't get a lot of the younger audience going to see it but that hasn't stopped them from making R rated movies before and I don't think they should be in competition especially when a lot of R rated series are more Horror, Fantasy, Crime and Romance than superhero but obviously when it comes to adapting Horror Superhero series like 'Razor' and 'Faust' for example there are going to be some comparisons with the DC and Marvel films and a percentage of those fans aren't going to like them 'cause they have a lot of blood, guts, violence, sex and nudity in them but the series were never intended for those target audiences. 'Spawn' and 'Witchblade' went for adult audiences with Horror themes and both outsold a lot of DC and Marvel's biggest selling superheroes with over 150 and 100 million sales 'cause they were able to reach out and find a different audience outside of the standard superhero audience that bought the comic books. 'The Crow' was largely praised by many fans for being dark, violent, graphic and pushing the boundaries while the 'Spawn' movie was mocked for being too light and watered down.
If 'Spawn' had been adapted right in the 90s I think it would have been as successful as 'The Crow' if not more so 'cause fans loved the character but the movie let them down. The next 'Spawn' movie needs to go all out and be everything the first movie should have been - a truly dark Horror superhero movie and I am glad to see Todd isn't letting studios water it down and turn it into an all ages movie. Bring on the blood and gore!!

Hopefully not gore just for the sake of gore as I hate that shit, but if it's gory for the story more the glory...ok im going to stop doing that now.
But this goes to what I said as well Todd's insistence on the next adaptation being more like the 90's animated show and less the movie is whats kept the IP out of the mainstream for 20 years, despite ther fact Todd has supposedly had a series written, recorded, animated, cast and voiced, that he is simply weeding out offers from multiple networks for decades now depending on just which interview you read.
Hopefully the film will be great but also some of the things he has said about it in the past has cast doubts, then theres the whole is Spawn a title that still works today? I am crossing my fingers as I have liked Spawn anytime I saw or read anything with the character, plus if this works then it's just going to open the door to more independent ip's getting a similar smaller budget but still big production and role out, which even if I don't like them all I want just so people like you Deb who may have those options because *bad Italian accent* the variety it is the spice of life.
But hey no one thought any sort of Venom movie would work these days and that damn movie made serious bank, which I attribute to simply the comedy of Venom calling Eddie a pussy, if the sword fight guy in Batman 89 is to thank for atleast $100m of that films box office, then Tom Hardy calling himself a pussy through a voice synthesizer is atleast to thank for minimum $250m imo .

No. I don’t think Todd will do that with the movie. From what he has described in interviews ‘Spawn’ sounds like it is going to be very story and have elements of mystery and suspense throughout it but apparently Spawn himself is not going to be the main focus of the movie which I don’t know is going to be a good or a bad thing ‘cause many longtime fans of the comic books want to see Spawn on the screen but Todd has denied all the previous reports that he is only going to have a small role in it and has said Spawn is going to appear a lot in the movie. I think he wants to do something people are not expecting with a comic book movie and he has gone out of his way to say it’s not going to be like any of the other superhero movies by DC and Marvel and will be more of a Horror movie than a superhero movie.
I think there is definitely a mainstream audience for movies like ‘Spawn’ and you only need to take a look at how popular the Horror genre is now and if you can bring that together with a superhero film it could be one of the biggest comic book movies of the decade being a Horror Superhero movie that unites fans of both superheroes and Horror movies. I am hoping the new movie turns out to be good ‘cause Spawn is one of the Top 10 biggest selling superheroes of all time and the character and most of all fans deserve a movie that does Spawn justice which the last movie didn’t do. There are a lot of things riding on the success of this movie and they have already said if it makes over 100 million they plan to bring more Image Comics series to the big screen but if Spawn is successful it will be the very first time the creator of a comic book series their series into their own hands and made it succeed on the screen.
The Horror Superhero movie I am most looking forward to is ‘Razor’ though and Emma Dumont gave another update about the movie a few days ago and Emma said she is doing all her own stunts and is learning Krav Maga and is in the gym three to four hours a day ‘cause the Director, Rob Cohen wants her to be able to fight for her life for real and it is great to see them taking this seriously ‘cause Razor is a bad ass fighter and needs to be played by a person who can fight. I will post the interview about it below so you can read more of it but I recall when I first read a ‘Razor’ comic in the early 90s it was nothing like anything I had read before with a female superhero and was very unique and with some exceptions many female superheroes in the 80s were written to be bland and 2Dish and didn’t have personality and the 90s saw that change with ‘Razor’ spinning off many other female lead series.
Razor was dark, edgy and aggressive, she swore, she had sex with men and women, she not only kills her villains she slices their heads off, their penises off and cuts their insides out with blood and guts going everywhere and she takes pleasure in killing them covering herself in their blood. While Razor has Horror villains like vampires and werewolves and become a vampire herself for a while she does not have larger than life villains and most of her villains are rapists, pedophiles, domestic abusers, serial killers and psychopaths and this is going to be like nothing we have seen in comic book movies to date and be very, very violent and brutal and some heads are gonna roll. As for Todd I think the thing is you just don't know, the guys been flapping his lips and clearly been lying through his teeth for decades now, I hope the film is great but lets not kid ourselves, just because Blumhouse is involved wont make it good, they produce bad films as well, they just happen to make a lot of successful films due to the low budget.
But if Spawn is a success I hope that opens up the industries eyes so they actually include the creator or atleast the creatives behind the current or most popular modern runs of those characters in the story making process.

With 'Razor' it was already announced last year Rob Cohen had a sequel and a spinoff locked in and the spinoff is most likely going to be of her sister, Strike or their descendant, Poizon who both had their own spinoff series (as seen below) or possibly 'Shi' who was the most successful spinoff character to come from 'Razor' and it was actually through 'Shi' 'Witchblade' was born with Sara making her very first appearance in a 'Shi/Cyblade' team up comic book but I don't think they have the rights to 'Shi' 'cause the last I heard was the creator was looking to make a 'Shi' movie that had no ties to any of the other characters. I don't think they will have majorly high expectations for 'Razor's' Box Office numbers especially since the company that it is being made under have released sequels to movies that made under $1 million and one of the best things about the Horror genre is the movies don't need to get ridiculously high Box Office figures from a mainstream audience to get sequels 'cause many of them are made for genre fans and I see a lot of Horror fans loving this type of movie who have been wanting more heroes in Horror movies like we have in Horror comics.
One interesting thing I read recently is they could be getting a big name to play Roman Van Drake who is the man that killed Nicole's Father and Sister (as it was first believed) and in the comic books Razor finds out her sister is still alive and Roman brainwashed her and made her into a deadly assassin known as Strike. He sends Strike out to kill Razor and the two fight and in the comic books Strike actually kills Razor and she realises Razor is her Sister and she was brainwashed and Razor is brought back from the dead by Poizon and has blades surgically inserted her arms which she uses as her main weapons thus the name 'Razor.' I think there won't be much of a problem with the cutting heads off since they do it in a lot of Horror movies and the rapists, pedophiles and domestic abusers are the perfect villain in Hollywood movies for the 'MeToo' era 'cause they are the real villains in real life a lot of us have had to face and Rob Cohen said last year that was one of the things that made this movie so important and was a truly feminist movie.
