Below is a list of 1950s TV material held by the National Archives of Australia. This material is from the non-commercial ABC network.
ABC (which then stood for Australian Broadcasting Commission, but now stands for Australian Broadcasting Corporation) was (and still is) a prolific producer of shows, and produced & broadcast a wide range of programs in the 1950s: variety shows, TV plays, children's shows, sports broadcasts, game shows, music recitals, talk shows, religious programs, etc....unfortunately, most of their archive was destroyed in the 1970s. What is listed below is mostly news reports and news file footage, along with some sports footage, children's programming, and on rare occasion a normal show by them.
Note: a lot of the material held by the archive only has approximate dates attached at the moment. The below list only includes material for the exact broadcast date is known...in fact a much larger amount of material is held than listed below...hopefully broadcast dates for more material become known eventually. None of this material is available for viewing, which is a pity. I think a lot of people would enjoy seeing news footage from the 1950s.
In [] is the running time if known, with many of the items being bits of news footage running under 1 minute. I have copied and pasted the titles of each item mostly unedited, which means that spelling/factual errors in titles are the fault of the National Archives, not me.
Note: "Camera Material" refers to outtakes/film rushes unless I'm mistaken.
Regarding shows listed several times: "Woman's World" was a magazine type show aired in daytime, "Kindergarten Playtime" was a long-running program for young children, "Weekend Magazine" was a news magazine program, "Ambrose Kangaroo" was a kids series aired as part of "Children's TV Club", "The Nature Of Things" was a series intended to be viewed in schools, "Panorama" was a news magazine show based on the long-running UK series, "Sports Page" and "Sports Cavalcade" were series about sports (kinda obvious, I guess), and "To Market, To Market" was a 5-minute series that ran for several years. ABC broadcast many variety/music shows, but very few are listed below. Completely absent from the below list are the various game shows they made such as "Find the Link" and "What's in the Picture".
Before you ask: no, I don't have a life. I'm autistic, and stuck at home all day, with long periods of intense boredom....hence plenty of time to copy and paste this info.
