I love this film. It may not be perfect but I enjoy it and feel it is well written, well acted and has great singing/songs. Eddie Murphy blows me away with such a strong performance (I still to this day feel he was robbed of that Oscar). Its the only time I watch Beyonce and don't dislike her, she was very good in this, although I learned that the character of Deena Rose (based off Diana Ross) was supposed to be more "bitchy" and diva like but Beyonce did not want to play her that way cause of her image etc. Of course they gave Beyonce whatever she wanted cause she's such a big name, but I prefer they just recast her if she is not willing to be seen as a "bitch".
Although I don't dislike Jennifer Hudson or her win for the film, I do feel it is an overhyped performance. She was good in her line delivery etc. but she has no emotion behind the eyes. She is always dead behind the eyes throughout the entire film!!! This drives me nuts as you never see any true emotion on her face but do hear it in her voice... ugh.
Anika Noni Rose is fine, but she doesn't have much of a presence which makes her easy to overlook or forget. I remember on "The View" they asked her what it feels like to be the "forgotten" Dreamgirl that no one cares about (LOL) and she said its hard at times cause she did her best but she gets how she's the one no one cares about while standing next to Beyonce and Jennifer Hudson.
Overall I love the film, its always peaked my interest in the true stories of The Supremes and of course Miss Diana Ross, and I wish I were alive in the 80s to see the Broadway show. I have seen clips on YouTube of the original "Effie White" singing and my mind was blown!!!
Overall 8/10

My opinion is the same as yours. I really like this film, and it's one of my favorite adaptations of a Broadway musical. Jennifer Hudson probably didn't deserve the Oscar, but her singing in "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going" gave me goosebumps on my initial viewing. Beyonce surprised me with her acting, and she did a good job channeling Diana Ross. Anika Noni Rose again was fine, but she was sadly overshadowed by Eddie Murphy, Beyonce, and Jennifer Hudson. Again, what's been said about Eddie Murphy has been said. He did a really job at not just capturing the popular R&B/soul male singers of that era, but getting their vulnerability. Jamie Foxx is definitely the weakest link of the cast. Lastly, I do kind of wished that they had made the arrangement of the songs sound like they're from the 1960s and 1970s instead of sounding contemporary.
Like you said, this film got me interested in learning the true history of the Supremes and the other Motown artists.

I thought Eddie Murphy was great. I don't know if he was nominated for any awards (too lazy to check right now) but to me he stole every scene.
The rest of the cast? Pretty much forgettable, including Hudson. I have no idea how she was even nominated, her performance was that bad.
Beyonce had to just look good and she delivered.
