Square Pegs! 1982-83
EVERY character on that show was funny (with the exception of Marshall, but he was cute and likeable). And there were eight regulars, so those are excellent odds! I would have loved it the show had lasted just ONE more season, you know, like "The Munsters", that would have been a kind of heaven. But I will take whatever gems are offered. That show was genius comedy. TV shows in general don't make me laugh as hard and as often as SP did. Now maybe if Pat Ast or Nancy Parsons had been on said show.... "- I'd like it if they like us, but I don't think they like us!"
Now I'm going to see if anybody else wrote "Square Pegs", too!

I loved this show and watched perhaps over a year ago on you tube, all episodes. I saw them in the early 80's on t.v. The only one I didn't like was the double christmas episode and it meandered a bit and wasn't even that funny. It was more about Patty and her Father bonding. Marshall was a cutie, but rather annoying and my favorite character of course was Johnny Slash. It's a shame that Merritt Butrick passed away at a young age of 29 from AIDS related complications. His Johnny character was obviously gay, but at the time, most of the herd wouldn't have picked up on this. None of my mates at the time ever commented on it, just that they thought he was funny and I think the likeable factor of Butrick, would have spoiled the image.
Have you seen the beauty of a film called Bless The Beasts & Children-71' Mr. Dirty? The actor who played Cotton, Barry Robins, was gay and he died early too in the mid 80's. The actor who played Marshall, reminds me a little bit of him with some of his mannerisms and vocal sound.

Frank's PlaceToo smart a show to survive. They moved it all over the schedule so you never knew when it was going to be on. A Lost Gem !

I agree with you about the Christmas episode. It seemed to want to look at the "serious" issues that teenagers were dealing with. It really wasn't even written to be a very funny episode, and it is the one episode that I regularly skip. At the same time, I do have a kind of respect for it, I guess, as this show really did, every now and then, touch ever so lightly on various "serious" issues, like when Jennifer snubbed her best friend, La Donna, in the girls' football episode. At the end, you can tell there's tension, but Vinnie gets Jennifer to apologize to La Donna, and La Donna sheepishly accepts, and I don't know, there was just something real going on. It was a little bit bittersweet. I think there were several little examples that could be bittersweet, and I loved the show even more because of it. But the Christmas episode is the one ep that doesn't play for laughs. Johnny Slash was a very lovable guy. Absolutely defenseless, like a little boy deer in the woods. I always liked it when Marshall would feed Johnny a snack and then give him a pat on the head! That was so cute. I guess Johnny was certain to be gay, though I never thought about it at all, really. Aside from knowing the actor in real life was gay. My favorite character, among so many great ones, would have to be Patty Green. The super likeable SJP makes me 100% on her side. My funniest regular character would be Muffy Tepperman. Yee - Gods! But the character who makes my sides hurt from laughing is Ms. Loomis! She was never able to leave her own self outside the classroom. Like when she gives the class their writing assignment topic... "What do I do when I'm all alone with nothing to do and nobody wants to be with me?" or when Patty comments to Lauren, "Oh, great. Now we're going to have to listen to Ms. Loomis lecture about "That first grey hair: pluck or tint?" I even laugh when I see those words in writing. That's interesting you asking me about "Bless the Beasts and the Children", TC. I first saw that movie when I was about ten years old, either the worst age for a boy to be watching that movie or the absolute perfect age to be watching it. I always remember it had a very strong impact on me. Then, I watched it again on YouTube about four years ago, and I still thought it was a moving film, in some ways more moving, I suppose. But the main actor I thought over-acted a lot. He seemed to always be screaming and was kind of over the top. Though all of the boys were tormented to varying degrees, and I guess his character was the most troubled of the boys. Though Barry Robins himself definitely had a certain appeal, beyond his good looks, and I looked him up afterwards and was very sad to read that he, too, died young from the same sad fate. But, yes, he did bear more than a passing resemblance to Marshall Blechtman.

But, yes, he did bear more than a passing resemblance to Marshall Blechtman. I forgot about Muffy—"It behooves me"—Tepperman, she was a hoot. At the time of the first airing of the show, I never really felt attracted to Johnny's character, although he was funny, I liked the more masculine visual appeal of Vinnie. It was Jennifer and the way she spoke that I recalled more readily. It wasn't until I saw Butrick in Star Trek 3 around the same time, that I instantly recognized him and saw how cute he was, when costumed up less flamboyantly or colorfully. Of course recently re-visiting it over 30 yrs later, I saw it through very different eyes and perceptions. It was a cleverly written show and another season would have been appreciated by me and of course other fans like yourself. Miss Loomis was a card and I always love Mr. Dirty, how you make the most out of the littlest things, from the character's idiosyncrasies. You have a keen and witty eye for the quirkiness in things and this is very insightful. Miss Loomis is very funny in the episode when she had the same crush on the janitor that Lauren did. Also, when she hosted a Halloween sleepover for the girls at her place. I don't think teachers would be allowed to do that today though. Marshall and Johnny go over to scare them dressed as ghosts and Johnny goes..."Boo, totally!"...and he is surprised when they guess who they are. With "Bless The Beasts And The Children", I think Robins played Cotton as angsty, and much of this may have been part of his own personality. He didn't do a lot of films, but I read an extensive article on him once which I wished I had made a reference of, regarding fan mail and a hook up. He did do a lot of stage work apparently and loved the piano. I was around 11 or 12 when I saw Bless..., and technically wasn't old enough due to the R13 rating. It was at the local high school which I wasn't attending at the time and put movies on for kids during the school holidays. My sister had already seen it and liked it and when I saw Cotton, I instantly had a gay boy crush on him. It was deep, and was full of yearning and longing. My biggest crush around that time I think was Erik Estrada in CHiPs.
