What is your opinion on portion size?

It would probably vary, depending on a person's physical size, and preference in feeling sated VS full.I'm 5'3", and small-boned. I don't have a great capacity for volume in one sitting, and I hate feeling "stuffed." (Note: this doesn't translate to "I-don't-eat-much." I could, probably, nibble all day.) I've heard the arbitrary description "the size of your fist," mentioned for several foods, as a healthy portion. That sounds about right, for me. Pastas, pizzas and other high-carb dishes, of course, make me feel fuller with less volume. And, it depends on how many dishes are served in the same meal. When I was in Italy with a group of friends, we had two meals that were "tasting menus," from specific chefs. The portions were quite small ... smaller than my fist ... but, there were 6 courses, and dessert. The bigger men - not heavy - took the option for "2nds," on some courses, and were fine. I was, borderline, uncomfortable at the end of those meals. (Should you ask about wine capacity, I won't answer. )

One of my pet peeves is that supermarkets package food by and large, for family consumption. I often find myself throwing out a lot of food after the "use by" date since I live alone. On portion size, I only need enough for a single day, and as picky as I am, would not want to repeat any certain food on a day to day basis. Hence, I am very careful on what I buy, and am especially wary of the "use by" dates...

In the past year or so, my wife and I switched to a subsistence type of shopping where we go to the store 4-5 times per week, as opposed to doing one big shopping trip on Sunday morning. It's allowed us to not only prevent food waste but also eat healthier as we're more cognizant of planning our meals for the next 1-2 days, rather than just buying a huge thing of this, a bag of that and hoping that we eat it all within a week or so. Of course, everyone's schedule and food buying options are different but it's been awesome for us.

MOTH and I (Man Of The House) go shopping nearly everyday, as we are lucky enough to be only 200mtrs(slightly longer in yards) from the Supermarket and other shops. We have two cars and don't drive there butt take Miss Daisy ( remember the film Driving Miss Daisy? www.google.com.au/search?q=personal+shopping+trolley+australia&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiX2I_42tHaAhUHkpQKHQjIC_UQ_AUICigB&biw=948&bih=441#imgrc=BD-POgF0QlzJLM:We buy fresh fruit and veg as delivered to the supermarket and divide the other goods throughout the week as we need them. We take advantage of specials in a really good rewards programme often get up to 50% off the regular price. We also supplement our shopping with growing fresh herbs and salad veges so I think that we eat very healthy. We eat small quantities of meat have chickens for eggs and I love cooking vegetarian type meals. We have a lot in common I see.

What is your opinion on portion size? I try to buy in small quantities so that there is no excuse for eating more. When it comes to cooking, I sometimes get wrong measure of foods like rice when I cook for guests. I have improved my fitness level a lot since eating more frequent but smaller meals. Earlier I used to have large dinners and I had started gaining weight. But since shifting to small meals I have lost a lot and I am closer to how I want to be. On a side-note, I like your user name. It reminds me of a dish I like - Gozleme!

It reminds me of a dish I like - Gozleme! Re-using leftovers is IMHO a lost art. I LOVE finding ways to re-use and improve leftovers with fresh ingredients in a makeover that is unique and tasty. Thanks for the compliment on my username. Over 16 years on posting on IMDb it has had many incarnations butt always with the Goz part. It actually is a shortened form of my original username which was Gorgeous Oz because I am Australian and Oz is a cute name for my country, and gorgeous . I ALSO adore Gozleme, as my country has a great multi cultural food culture and these Turkish delights are just another wonderful food that I enjoy along with so many other dishes from other countries, especially Asian and Middle Eastern.

For me, it depends on the food. Every year on my birthday my oldest brother makes his peanut butter pie & brings it to me. Then it would be 1 pie . One of the things that I purposely did with my bakery was to offer all slices/bars in the case instead of whole items. That way if someone just wants a snack, they take 1 item. If they need something for 12ppl they can get a variety instead of being regulated to one thing. Same goes for our rolls. They are packaged in twos. That I got from my favorite scene in Father of the Bride. When he goes to the grocery store & starts tearing apart the packages of hot dog buns.

One more anecdote: I was at the supermarket about 2 months ago. They had a special on pre-made twice baked potatoes, 2 to a package. The deal was "buy one and get one free" so since I love twice baked taters, I took 2 and placed them into my cart. 2 is plenty, but 4 way too many for me. When I got to check out and paid my bill, there was a man standing next in line to me. I handed him the "get one free" package and told him to enjoy the freebie on me. He was flabbergasted...

When cooking at home and using a recipe, I've learned to cut whatever I'm fixing by at least half. Eating in restaurants, the portion sizes are always too large. I end up taking at least half home on most things. I would rather pay less for a smaller portion.

This has to do with meal serving portions, not so much package portion sizes in the grocery stores.
Anyway, I've thought about this in the past while watching TV, and I've concluded that the way they tout ginormous serving portions on some of the cooking shows is pretty bad, really. I mean, who needs to be stuffed with that many calories at one sitting, unless you're going out to work it off as a lumberjack, or play four quarters of football? I'm all for a filling meal where you don't leave the table feeling deprived, but really, a lot of the serving sizes they portray are getting ridiculous. Haven't they heard of the national obesity epidemic, or diabetes and other health problems that are dietary related?

Then again, she lived through the Great Depression so she wasted nothing! Everything was always fresh. I don't know how we'd find the time though. My wife and I both work and right now I'm coaching my son's football team and my wife coaches my daughter's cheer squad. I do one large trip on Saturdays and then after their games on Sundays I cook a few heat and eat type meals for the week as their practice schedules vary. We definitely throw out/waste too much food!

Yeah man, it's definitely an adjustment. For us, my wife works from home twice per week, and I switched firms in the past 2 years which was tantamount to a big promotion, but most importantly it gave me a lot more free time. So we're both able to hit to the store fairly often. We also don't have kids, which frees up A LOT of time. Plus, there's a Trader Joe's about a half mile from our house so that also helps. We're definitely fortunate in that our schedules allow for it and it's not as easy for everyone. One thing you can try is take your excess produce and turn them into protein shakes. You can pretty much use any vegetable or fruit in them so rather than chucking them, blend them up!

Maybe when the kids get a little older we'll give it a go. Funny you say that about the produce as we do that already too. I've always worked out a lot and in the last year my wife has gotten on board too. We exercise daily and have morning shakes and throw our produce in there. Where we struggle most is with dinners. Like I said with the practice schedules being crazy, I make big meals on Sunday that heat up well for the week. I always make too much. That's the Italian in me.
