Man of Steel is the better movie ultimately, but it falls apart with the disaster porn at the end.
The second part is tricky.
Henry Cavill is a better Kal El of Krypton.
Brandon Routh is a better Clark Kent.
Ultimately Cavill is the better Superman once he is allowed to add more Clark Kent to his performance.

Superman Returns on both accounts for me. An intelligent, inspiring movie that believed Superman was a hero, not a brooding loner. Tons of fun, filled with excellent performances—Routh, Kevin Space, Frank Langella, Eva Marie Saint—and a deep love of the Christopher Reeve films. Its tone is light and airy, yet it understands the essence of Superman, why we love him so (the Superman story recalls the Biblical story—Father sends Son to save world), better than any movie since the original Superman. (Batman v Superman also understands this aspect to Supes, one reason I found it so refreshing.) The direction, writing, and camerawork are bold, colorful, cinematic, intelligent, and ‘grown-up’ without giving way to sophomoric cynicism. Am I really the only person who unapologetically loved this one?

SUPERMAN RETURNS was absolutely PAINFUL to watch. Don't get me wrong, I think Routh actually did a pretty good job in the role, but otherwise the movie was painful. I think my eyes bled a little. And I'm a Batman - then Wonder Woman - then Superman fan, so... MAN OF STELL, however, made me fall back in love with the character, to the point that I now prefer MAN OF STEEL over all Batman movies I've ever seen.

Man of Steel was the WORST COMIC BOOK MOVIE OF ALL TIME until Batman v Superman hit cinemas.

I like Superman Returns' supporting cast (with the exception of their Lois).
But I think Cavill makes the better Superman, though his Clark needs a lot of work.

I’m not completely sure I agree, and I far prefer Superman Returns (as I wrote above, am I the only person who unapologetically loves the movie?), but I definitely agree with you that Cavill’s Clark needs a lot of work. They don’t spend much time with his Clark, though, do they?

Which was the better movie and which had the better Superman? They are both good movies, Superman Returns was fun, and one of the few films where I liked Kevin Spacey---But Man Of Steel was great, one of my all time favorite movies, Cavill was superb as Superman(not so much in BvS), movie had a great villain, and great visual effects--A movie better than many MCU movies

Man of Steel.
Still don't get the controversy it received.

And I'm a fan of Superman Returns as well. I wouldn't say I love it (I reserve that for the first Superman movie), but I certainly enjoy it more than Superman 3 or the DCEU Superman movies.

Nah, Superman Returns is infamously shitty.

Wholeheartedly disagree. Snyder was too anxious to do Batman and settled for Superman.

They’re both better than than history portrays them but couldn’t be more different. That said... equal? MoS has more epicness but also more gripes, Returns was just a quieter, smoother ride. About equal.
