www.imdb.com/news/ni60767825/?ref_=nb_nwt_1What do you think of this idea, a new remake of Scarface? Yes, there was one from 1932, and 1983 (the most famous version, I think). Who should be cast as the lead? The setting is changed from Miami (at least in the 1983 version) to Los Angeles, and Scarface himself is to be of Mexican rather than Cuban origins.

I don't like it. I guess I like the '83 version so much that I feel it's unnecessary to do another version of it. Plus, Pacino as Tony Montana (even if you think he's cartoonish and over-the-top) is one of the most memorable film characters ever.

With everything that is happening in the US, a Scarface re-remake actually makes sense. In the 30s, you had the Italian mobsters trying to control Chicago. In the 80s, you had the whole coke scene in Miami, plus Cubans. And now, we're having political issues about the cartels and immigration.

Yeah, but I don't think a movie should be necessarily updated for the current generation. To me that feels like the people who want a Back to the Future remake where they go back in time to the 80s. It doesn't work like that in my opinion.

I love the Coen brothers, but I won't be excited until I see who the director will be. Although, David Mackensie was a front runner for the directors chair as of today, which would be a huge acquisition. If Mackensie is on board then so am I.

The Coens certainly could make something of this story - although I can't forget their one bad film, The Ladykillers, is their one remake. But I'm not sure why they'd want to. And the new setting is a step down, as it was in The Ladykillers, too.

While the 1983 movie with Al Pacino is iconic i think there is a possibility ill like the Coen Bro's version more if they make it's general tone/style inline with No Country for Old Men (2007), which is serious, as i consider No Country for Old Men (2007) to be the Coen's #1 movie as i gave it a 9/10 as it's within my Top 29 movies where as Scarface, while it used to be amongst my very top movies, recently took a hit for me and is now only within my Top 200 movies. still, Scarface (1983) remains amongst my favorite movies, just not amongst the cream of the crop like it once was until a recent re-watch on Dec 31st 2016.
i hope the Coen's direct it as then i can be confident it will be of higher quality. without them directing, it's probably less likely to stand out to any higher degree is my guess.

I'm not against it, as it does seem a repeatable story. With the Coens though, I hope it's not too claustrophobic.
