A while ago I watched an episode of the 1950s anthology series Four Star Playhouse titled Award, which consists entirely of two characters. I enjoyed it a lot (it's surprising how entertaining two people talking to each other for 25 minutes can be)
So on that note, can you people please name some films consisting entirely (or nearly entirely) of four characters or less?
I'm certain there must be some films that match this description.

I was going to say "Locke" or "buried", they only have one person on screen the entire film, but there are more than a dozen voices on the other end of the phone in both films. Not sure if they qualify enough for you.

No one's suggested Sleuth (1972 or 2007) yet?

And of course Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf - I'm pretty sure there's no appearance from anyone but the four principals.

There's also The CallerIt's a Sleuth-like mystery/sci-fi movie with just Malcolm McDowell and Madolyn Smith Osborne. It's not that great of a movie but kind of interesting.

I immediately thought of Silent Running (1972). That film has only four human characters that appear on-screen. There are some additional characters who we only hear as voices on the radio. And there are three robots (called "Drones" in the film).

Paranormal Activity is mostly just two characters doing things with few more others having about two minute roles.

There's also a remake of Sleep. You can check it out if the original version is too short for you. This one runs for 8 hrs or so.

Venus in Fur was mentioned but there is also another movie that comes to mind from the same director... Carnage (2011). that has four characters in it and that's basically it and it's all pretty much in one room nearly the entire movie.

@ tepebenjamin ; Locke is a quality movie as that's pretty much one character in his car basically the whole movie.
