Wow! I had a TI994A and a...wait for it...Timex Sinclair. Anyone remember them? link I even programmed a simply game on mine where a 'ship' moved up and down on the left side of the screen and 'shot' at enemies that came in from the right....all with just ASCII characters.

I tried to do the same thing several times.
Of course, I was a 8 year boy who didn't know English at the time, an every book about programming was in... Yep you guessed it, English.
I did manage to write (copy withour understanding anything) a minor program which flashed all the 16 colours in succession on the screen.
I also tried to program a few of the games you could find some of the magazines (in English), which actually showed the entire code (a few pages worth) in it.
The two major problems I had was that a kid who typed one and one letter into the thing and had to search the keyboard for every letter, would take the entire day and one spelling mistake would make the who thing fail. Needless to say, it didn't work.
