Susans
Here in the U K, Suzy Kendall, Susan Hampshire and Susannah York were acting contemporaries born in the late 1930s. A contemporary in America would be Suzanne Pleshette. Susan George and Susan Penhaligon soon followed in their footsteps here in Britain, while Susan Saint James, Susan Sarandon, Susan Lucci, Susan Anton, Susan Sennett and others duly followed in America.
'Susan is a feminine given name, from Persian "Susan" (lily flower), from Egyptian sšn and Coptic shoshen meaning "lotus flower", from Hebrew Shoshana meaning "lily" (in modern Hebrew this also means "rose" and a flower in general), from Greek Sousanna, from Latin Susanna, from Old French Susanne.'

But one of them was not a real Susan. And that was Suzy Kendall. That's right, Suzy Kendall was a stage name ... her real name is Freda Harriet Harrison!

My Dad fancied her. I have heard her referred to as the "poor man's Julie Christie" She started strongly with TO SIR WITH LOVE and UP THE JUNCTION. FRAULEIN DOCTOR not bad. . Her career fizzled out in European giallo, including TORSO, which had the dvd poster tagline "Where whores meet saws!"

For me, it's a tie between Suzy Kendall and Julie Christie when I look at my top 12 movies for each, though Christie's had a far longer career and earned countless critical plaudits (I actually tend to prefer her genre work). Would 'Torso' rank for you as a bomb stinker? A lot of horror fans love Sergio Martino's work, myself included, as tributes to Kendall posted online at horror sites demonstrate.
Suzy Kendall : 'Thunderball' (1965 - Terence Young) / 'Circus Of Fear' (1966 - John Llewellyn Moxey) / 'The Penthouse' (1967 - Peter Collinson) / 'To Sir, With Love' 1967 - James Clavell) / 'Up The Junction' (1968 - Peter Collinson) / 'The Bird With The Crystal Plumage' (1970 - Dario Argento) / 'The Assault' (1971 - Sidney Hayers) / 'Story Of A Cloistered Nun' (1973 - Domenico Paolella) / 'Tales That Witness Madness' (1973 - Freddie Frances / 'Torso' (1973 - Sergio Martino) / 'Spasmo' (1974 - Umberto Lenzi) / 'Craze' (1974 - Freddie Frances)
Julie Christie : 'Billy Liar' (1963 - John Schlesinger) / 'Darling' (1965 - John Schlesinger) / 'Petulia' (1968 - Richard Lester) / 'McCabe & Mrs. Miller' (1971 - Robert Altman) / 'Don't Look Now' (1973 - Nicolas Roeg) / 'Shampoo' (1975 - Hal Ashby) / 'Nashville' (1975 - Robert Altman) / 'Demon Seed' (1977 - Donald Cammell) / 'Heaven Can Wait' (1978 - Warren Beatty & Buck Henry) / 'Heat And Dust' (1983 - James Ivory) / 'Afterglow' (1997 - Alan Rudolph) / 'No Such Thing' (2001 - Hal Hartley)
It's probably a bit like how we see Carroll Baker's career. We both like a lot of her early work. But then you love 'Sahara Sixpack', 'Mister Moses', 'Harlow', 'The Carpetbaggers', while I much prefer her genre pictures she made in Italy to those pictures.

TORSO - not quite a bomb but I didnt rate it high. I caught her last star movie ADVENTURES OF A PRIVATE EYE at the Romford Odeon in 1977. The ADVENTURES OF... were a poor man's CONFESSIONS OF... series - low grade sub CARRY ON smut that gave employment to Suzy, Diana Dors, Adrienne Posta (my favourite "dolly bird"), Irene Handl, etc Oh I like Carroll's giallo too esp ORGASMO and A QUIET PLACE TO KILL. My favourite Carroll is probably SYLVIA though. Never much cared for MISTER MOSES but I like THE CARPETBAGGERS and STATION SIX SAHARA ("The Black Sheep of British Cinema" )a lot. Judy Geeson (star of ADVENTURES OF A TAXI DRIVER!plus TO SIR WITH LOVE and THREE INTO TWO WONT GO) & Susan (MANDINGO, STRAW DOGS, VENOM) George were the other strong contenders in the "Poor Man's Julie Christie" stakes, probably becoming more widely known than Suzy. The Director of VENOM said the black mamba was the best behaved cast member during the shoot Julie Christie wise, here's the real deal....

Oh Yes, she was in Argento's The Bird with the Crystal Plumage 1970 There was also Alistair MacLean's Fear is the Key 1972, a movie I remember as deadly boring. Watched To Sir, With Love 1967 at the time after Poitier passed away.

Love Judy Geeson and Susan George but again you know you're entering genre cinema territory here. These are the women you'd currently hear Caroline Munro celebrate on a Friday night on Talking Pictures while introducing a shock cinema double bill as the Cellar Dwellar, or Quentin Tarantino celebrating during a pre-screening interview for their relatively neglected, highly cinematic gems. Arthouse, no, and often put down as "its so bad its good" in the U K ... like Suzy Kendall.

Suzy Kendall and Susan George could have played sisters.
Kendall has the freakiest banshee-like scream--I notice in Berberian Sound Studio they have her listed as "guest screamer."
