Greatest action movie for me, definitively. I'd rank the genre DH first, with The Terminator, Predator, & Aliens to follow. Growing up in the 80's was epic. Became a Christmas movie for many- for me because local Toronto CityTV would play it annually, stayed in my Christmas rotation once dvds arrived.

8/10 from me.
Probably McTiernan's best movie. I really enjoy Die Hard, it's well written, well acted and never loses momentum. The only thing is, after getting used to the amount of action (as in kill count, number of shots fired, explosions etc...) of foreign cinema, rewatching Die Hard, I realized that it has comparatively less 'action' than I remember. That's not really a bad thing though, the amount of action in Die Hard is perfect in terms of what the movie was going for.
Die Hard would easily be in my top 5 action movies, but it's not my favorite action movie. I prefer Hard Boiled to Die Hard. In terms of pure on-screen-action, John Woo is a master of the craft.

10/10 - I agree, Twothousandonemark, it is an action classic.
Hey, are you from Toronto, too? You mention City TV, a great station back in the day. Grew up on their Late Great Movies.

10/10 I kinda found the 'bond' between McClane and Sgt. Al a little annoying after a while. And then that ending with the cop shooting one of the main bad guys? And making the local cops look like bumbling fools was typical of that era. I wish they had made them smart and actually up to the challenge. Especially the FBI. But there is no denying this is a great action film thanks in no small part to Bruce Willis and maybe more so to Alan Rickman who is perfect as the evil 'terrorist' Hans Gruber. One of the more justifiably celebrated 'action' films. The sequel's worth watching, too.

It's the greatest action movie of all time in my opinion.
I hated Bruce Willis at the time, but I was blown away.
From the ads:
"A Movie that will blow you out of the back wall of the theater!"
The plot twists worked, and the movie's performances make it an easy film to enjoy again and again when I come across it on television.
Lethal Weapon hasn't aged well, but Die Hard is the gold standard.

One theory i saw on the film was that it was about McClane reasserting his masculinity and regaining marriage control--symbolized by the scene where he removes her career watch so Gruber falls--and then after that she refers to herself by her married name. The depiction of black characters is intriguing too.
The skinny slacker black limo driver is a good guy, as is the fat cop, but the brainy tech black is a bad guy, as is the corrupt FBI agent Johnson (not to be confused with the other agent Johnson). What is the message here--good blacks are blue collar, bad blacks are white collar? heh
Then again we also have the ubiquitous psychotic blonde alpha male. And the total moron white police deputy chief Dwayne Robinson (I think even Siskel and Ebert signaled him out as a ridiculous character).
And it is a black guy who saves McClane in the end. The evil blonde guy would have had him for sure.
"When Alexander saw the breadth of his domain, he wept, for there were no more worlds to conquer...benefits of a classical education."

It's probably the best written pure action movie ever. By that I mean no hook attached like an alien hunter or the Ark of the Covenant.

9.4/10. I went with 9 overall. It remains the second best pure action movie of all time to me (just after Raiders of the Lost Ark).

Masterpiece, classic, or whatever, it surely is one of the very few action films that I have seen and thought imediately that is a perfect 10/10 Surely a worthy name within the perfect 10/10 list of bad ass action movies such as: The Road Warrior, The Terminator, Escape from New York, Predator and First Blood.

Storywise it's b-movie fare, but done this way it actually works, it was done just before cgi took over totally, Bruce Willis could have continued with this kind of roles, but he stumbled as fame use to do, a solid 8/10

10/10.
It has the best antagonist I've ever seen in a film. Alan Rickman nailed it as Hans Gruber. We were introduced to the famous "Yippee Ki-Yay" quote from Bruce Willis's character. The growing friendship between McClane and Powell was a nice touch. I always laugh when Hans falls off of the skyscraper. The explosions are awesome! You can tell that everybody behind the film really put a huge effort into it. This is a perfect trilogy.
I say trilogy because it kinda lost its appeal after the third installment. Live Free or Die Hard (2007) and A Good Day to Die Hard (2013) was just a way to keep milking the franchise.

10/10
I like how the film is set in only one setting. It gives the film a claustrophobic feel and adds to the suspense. Alan Rickman is excellent as Hans Gruber. He is very suave and cunning. I liked the part where Hans pretends to be an American office worker, but blows his cover as he speaks German into the walkie talkie. Nice to see Andreas Wisniewski pop up as one of the terrorists. His death produces one of the most iconic quotes in the DH franchise.
Great score from Michael Kamen. The twangy Spanish guitar when McClane see the girlie calendar was a nice touch
Reginald Veljohnson is great as Sgt Al Powell. I liked how he shot a child and has been unable to shoot anyone again, adds a layer to his character. The banter between Powell and the store cashier was hilarious! I liked that Powell was funny at times, without changing the tone of the film.
