AU HASARD BALTHAZAR treads the fine line between a deep tale about the different ways and the frequency in which life can be sad and unfair... and being meandering tragedy porn. In the end, it leans more towards the former. Some of the performances are weak, but not bad. At least not to the point where they ruin the story.

One of the great classic era world cinema films from master Robert Bresson.
His films are so deceptively unique and singular. Free of flash, artifice, or overt stylistic flourishes but still always instantly recognizable as his own.

At the end of the day, any deeper subtext ("the donkey is Jesus!") didn't really matter to me because the meandering tragedy porn side got the better of it.
