See, the way I see it is if a system has a controller with less than 2 analogue sticks it's retro.
Also, the nintendo wii doesn't apply here because it's weird. But it isn't retro.

I'm thinking a console without a HDMI port is now retro. But, generally there isn't a strict definition of 'retro' it tends to be whatever the individual thinks it is

Basically I would say if you can't buy a console or its games new in shops then it's retro.

Also, another thing that lines up with my opinion.
It is only a retro console, if it is a huge leap from the console generation that came before it.
Therefore the Ps1, N64, and dreamcast are the last 3 retro consoles. Unless I'm forgetting one maybe Jaguar.
And also, they have one or less analogue thing.

The dualshock controller for PS1 had 2 analogue sticks though. Granted, it wasn't the original controller for the console but it came out prior to the arrival of the PS2.

But, generally there isn't a strict definition of 'retro' it tends to be whatever the individual thinks it is I think azzajones said it best. I've heard so many variations of what's retro, what's not. Me personally, I think any console released before 2000 is retro. I was born in 1983, so had the luxury of owning most of the systems (if not playing them all) during the 1990's era. For the most part, 'retro' is a term used by an individual for game/game systems they played as a kid.The Atari 2600 system is the pioneer if not most retro system of them all, games flat out won't work today for the system in some cases. I call the system old, lol. Still, you had classic games like Yars' Revenge and so-bad-they're-good games like E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. Great stuff now. (:I think Nintendo in the '80s was the first gaming console that took video games to new heights. There was such a variety of games and stories you can play, and most of all relate to as a kid. Just to name a couple of the several dozen games on the system, the games Super Mario Bros. and The Legend of Zelda showed you just how a couple titles can become franchised for the next several decades that followed. That's retro at its best. (; Gameplay is also a huge advancement in what's considered the best retro games, which is where the '90s took over. Super Nintendo and the Sega Genesis really amped up most memories for kids (adults today), so much that you were either a SNES guy or a SEGA guy growing up. On one system you could play Super Metroid or Super Castlevania IV, and on the other Sonic the Hedgehog or Golden Axe. What made the games especially special were the soundtracks (score music coming out). There was nothing wrong with 8-bit NES scores, but 16-bit music was edgy fun. I mean you had music artist Michael Jackson help compose one of the Sonic the Hedgehog games. Music in a game can go a long ways especially in this era of gaming.When Playstation came out, that for me took games to where it's at today. Nintendo 64 held on to the cartridge pastimes of games before, and Sega Dreamcast while different was on the verge of bankrupt and couldn't keep a name for itself. Playstation came out and gave us realistic action, sci-fi, and horror games that for me hadn't been done before. The games today look dated in more ways than one, especially with their cutscenes. The earliest PS1 games used real (bad) actors for their cutscenes, how retro is that? Lol, still, games like Resident Evil and Silent Hill. I think are unmatched in most people's taste for horror in video game. As mentioned, the controllers, hook-ups, and graphics were moving into the year 2000 with what would become the more modern day games today with Microsoft XBOX and PS2.All in all, retro to me is anything from the 20th century of gaming. Those games from one decade to the next has nostalgia, and nostalgia is a keyword for anything retro from movies to collectibles to even cartoons of the same years and earlier. The looks, the sounds, the effects of the time, it all brings back memories to when we each were a kid. Now, I couldn't tell you 20% of the game titles released since 2020. Whereas I could name you every top and rare game from the systems listed above. (:Sorry, long rant. I hope it helps answer your question. The evolution of joysticks-to-controllers-to-Wiimote-to-whatever they're at now, is a small fraction to what can be considered retro and not. I think technology in games have stayed relatively the same in the last 25 years with the smallest advancements. Where as the 25 years prior, it was monumental changes in gaming. Game systems today are like what arcade machines were way back. Games for a different generation at a time. This is all my opinion of course.Hope it helps! Gifs includes. (;

At PAX last year I asked a member of the retro gaming club what they consider 'retro' and he answered the members of the club can't agree on what is 'retro'. The latest consoles their section had was the PS2 & OG XBox, so I tend to think from those backwards are retro.
