According to Elliot Friedman of... Rogers I guess he works for.
Apparently the players were told today.

Ownership tanked that team.

Just as well. Arizona won't have any water soon, why have a team playing 41 games a night on it.
This is a huge gift for the NHL, getting a team in a ready city, hungry to make its mark, like the Vegas Golden Knights.
Phoenix, Atlanta, Hartford, Quebec City, Kansas City, Cleveland... I don't think we lament any of those really. Nordiques would've been on the clock all this time anyways, Denver, Colorado was a step up from small Francophone winter city.

You're aware Arizona was awarded an expansion team before I even started this thread, right? It's been no secret in the Canadian media. They just don't want to play a couple more years in the 5,000 seat Mullet Arena, so they are the owners are ripping Ryan Smith off $200 M and moving the team.

I mildly lament the loss of the Hartford Whalers. I was never a fan (only moderately follow hockey, but the Rangers are me team), but I grew up in Connecticut and it was sad when they left, and since then they must've sold more Whalers merch than they ever did when the team was still there. I see it all the time... still.

I was not aware & I think it's top 5 all-time NHL on brand moments if it's accurate. I know chatter around these parts (igloos & moose country) is even at 32 teams, the NHL would like to get to 30-32 American teams. 27 right now, room for 3-5 more American expansion. I think that's inane - MLS soccer is there now, too many teams, & sides don't even annually play one another anymore, let alone talent void.

You're further south than me, over here in Glen Murray land. I shouldn't say he (the current Coyotes owner) officially has an expansion team, it's more like a first right of refusal type thing. I'd say if he gets the land and an arena built he's practically guaranteed to get a team. I don't watch a lot of THG on YouTube, but I do watch all his videos about the Coyotes ans potential expansion. He's typically correct with both his info and predictions. He's expecting 36 teams around 2030. EDIT: There's 25 US teams right now, I believe. Us 7 Canadian makes 32.

The 27 was a Freudian from me - & Jeff Maryk & Elliot Friedman, I was listing pod at work & that was the error they put in me. I think they had the 7 on the brain & slipped.
I know the NHL is in love with this owner Smith guy or whatever for Salt Lake - the NHL wants him in their fold, to help boost things as it were like a Mark Cuban. Dunno about that... but I guess they're trying to have an open house for any other young'ish billionaire willing to play hockey in the US.
