I'm on the fence...
As a sci-fi big budget adventure movie I loved it and thought it was a lot of fun.
As a die hard Star Wars fan I was disappointed and thought it didn't give us what we wanted.
So... ?
I had a feeling we weren't going to get everything we wanted. I had a feeling we weren't going to get all the answers, maybe only a few, and that we weren't going to get Luke being an awesome Jedi Master.
But I would have been satisfied with all that if they gave us at least a few things: And the very top of my list was Luke kicking some ass... especially if he died in this movie.
Well sure enough... he died. But no ass kicking; not really anyway, because the little he did was fake 'cuz he wasn't there at all. ...And then he dies... of exertion. Wtf?
So I'm in the curious position of having two separate and distinct experiences of this movie. I liked the movie overall and applaud Rian Johnson for going left whenever we hoped he would go right, that shows original thinking which we needed after TFA. But I am simultaneously disappointed that we didn't get the great fan moments we were hoping for, and that we'll never get them because so many of the characters and scenarios are now closed off. Luke dead. Snoke Dead. Phasma dead. Carrie Fisher dead. Who's left? Chewie?!
Its an unusual position for a Star Wars movie to put me in, and I don't know yet if that's good or bad. Two years to wait to see what Abrams does with the leftovers of this movie in Ep.9.
p.s. I rank the franchise like this, IMO:
ANH ESB TFA TLJ ROTJ ROTS AOTC
TPM lol
Thoughts?

Well I'll say this... if Rian Johnson hadn't taken a dump on the lore and mythos... and if he had listened to Mark Hamill about some suggestions for the Luke Skywalker character, this probably would've turned out to be a movie that would've been accepted by all of the fans. I think if that had happened everyone would've forgiven the moments of over-the-top Disney humor. And some of the plot weaknesses. Having said that, that still leaves one big elephant in the room: Rian Johnson opening all of those empty mystery boxes of JJ Abrams! And when you look at some of the dynamics, that all seems to be by design. Johnson takes the role of the fall guy for opening most of Abrams empty mystery boxes in TLJ, and then he gets rewarded with his own trilogy: episodes 10 through 12. I like the movie once you take away the 3 major issues: (1)opening empty mystery boxes (2)the subpar characterization of Luke (3)stretching the Force lore more towards Disney magic. But those are big issues.

I honestly wasn't liking it too much at first. Poe's confrontation was too over the top. Carrie Poppins was dumb. Luke's initial scenes were anticlimactic. Then once the film got going, I did like it more. Disappointed that I think that Luke's character at the beginning was too much of a stretch for me to believe, but relieved that the character I saw at the end was quintessential Luke Skywalker, IMHO. Not some revisionist Disney character nor some fanboy's dream of him being some sort of grand warrior, but a progression from the Luke I saw at the end of Return of the Jedi, maybe even more like Gary Kurtz's vision of him, literally "going off into the sunset".
Disappointed that Snoke's obviously deep dark past wasn't looked at in any way before he was sabered in two.
Interesting, I've gone from liking it a bit, to liking it more as each day passes as it digests... I may end up loving this one yet, flaws and all.

I liked it. I'll never love it, & it's too decent to hate. I know already I prefer it to TFA which I'm not sure when I'll ever watch again. The Luke & some Leia stuff was much stronger in TLJ for me than Han Solo in TFA.
I haven't really hated any SW except the ground battle in TPM between droids & GunGans.

I give it a solid 6 out 10. Just overall with the new trilogy, I'm not huge on the "First Order" being the bad guys. We still don't know much about 'em or how they came to power and everything. Wish we could move on from stormtroopers. But I like Kylo Ren. He's a very complicated villain rather than just a straight-up bad guy., which I think is good characterization. Though its a shame we will never see Han, Luke and Leia together on the big screen again. I think there was a little too much humor. It all worked honestly, but I still think it was too much in some spots. Still wish we had one decent dual from Luke against whoever. Visually though, it's a stunning film. Great cinematography to it. The highlight of the cinematography is definitely Luke's death. Honestly, that makes up for me for how they executed it. It wasn't perfect, but at least it was shot beautifully and a nice call back to the twin suns from a New Hope.
Really? You put this and The Force Awakens over Return of the Jedi??? I know everyone likes Empire the best, but personally, Return of the Jedi will always be my favorite!

I thought it was okay. It was very flat for a while, almost half the movie, but there were several things about it that I liked. It is my least favorite of the new movies, but still miles better than all the prequels. I'm not sure how I would rank them, I would really have to think about it.

Can't love it, can't hate it either. Was disappointed when it ended, but upon reflection my rating was 6.5/10, simply because it's more daring and original than TFA (which is NOT difficult of course) and some of the stuff was interesting.
My personal gripes are:
- Botched, silly B-storyline of Diet Battlestar Galactica (including mutany) with plot holes and redundancies galore - "Forced" absurd Reylo relationship ending in a quasi-RotJ scene rehash - Lame final battle piece, which de facto useless walkers for retro rehash - No new iconic designs, concepts or characters (compare that to Empire!) - Music was only serviceable (see above) - Character development was unconvincing
R1 > TLJ > TFA

I think I'd be good with a purge of both good & bad sides to close this trilogy, heading into future chapters.
I've been reading more about how yes, this universe is making the OT a moot point with its victories... then again, that's the nature of war. The casino planet was a good sidetrack to tell us that both the Order & the Rebels are in the arms trade. That should be a big deal.

I don't hate or love this film. I think it's better than Attack of the Clones and The Phantom Menace and I didn't hate the first two prequels.
Empire Strikes Back A New Hope The Force Awakens Revenge of the Sith Return of the Jedi Rogue One The Last Jedi Attack of the Clones The Phantom Menace

While I enjoyed Episode 7, sadly I'm not a fan of Episode 8. - The humor was all wrong - The handling of Luke Skywalker was abysmal. i.e. He throws the lightsaber away?!, he tries to kill a sleeping child (who happens to be his padawan and nephew on top of that), he's a sarcastic/cynical asshole to Rey while training her (imagine if Ben and Yoda had done that to Luke), he's arrogant ("dusts off his shoulder"), he doesn't immediately go to Leia after he hears about Han (Luke always would try to save his friends), etc. I hate that Han Solo died to protect Luke's location, so Luke could selfishly give up on some remote island by himself. He went there to die? Stupid. Honestly, I will never get that image of Luke milking the creature out of my head! The only Luke scene I did like was Luke & Leia together. - I really liked Poe Dameron in Episode 7. In 8, they've managed to undo that for me. Poe orchestrates a mutiny? He's a terrible soldier for doing that. Then at the end of the whole thing, they don't even hold him accountable. What do we get instead? A line from Leia saying something along the lines of, "Oh that silly Poe Dameron. Such a kidder! I like him!" What the hell? I'm tired of seeing movies where mutinous, insubordinate characters get away with their reckless, disrespectful behavior. I have so many issues with this movie. When at the beginning of the movie when Hux started asking if the Resistance could hear him giving orders, I got this feeling I was in for something bad...I was right. I don't hate Rian Johnson. I am disappointed with what he gave us though.

"Love" is a strong word, so I guess me. I think it's the best one since Empire, but it has its flaws and I get some of the complaints. Still, I like the direction it took the characters and it had clever ideas and subversions of my expectations. Do wish Luke got to be more badass, though. His use in the film would have been fine if only they hadn't killed him off and saved him for the next one.

I'd say I fall into that camp. I really liked all of the Rey, Kylo Ren, Luke, and Snoke stuff and hated just about everything else.
My favorite scenes were the Yoda appearance and Luke's confrontation with Kylo. My least favorite parts were Rose stopping Finn from destroying the giant laser and Poe's crank call joke with Hux.
I guess I lean on the more negative side, overall, but the parts I enjoyed, I really enjoyed.

While I enjoyed Episode 7, sadly I'm not a fan of Episode 8. I'm with you. I'm not a Luke fanboy and so I wasn't following his media sound bytes leading up to the film, but watching them afterwards has been both enlightening, funny, sad and frustrating all at the same time. Directors and writers don't often care for what actors might suggest about their characters, but in this case, maybe you should've listened to the guy who made the quintessential Star Wars character famous.

It's such a shame Mark Hamill didn't have a script approval stipulation put into his contract. While they remained true to Han Solo's nature/character in Episode 7, Episode 8 failed to that with Luke Skywalker. I was very excited when I read "Jedi Master Luke Skywalker" in the opening crawl, but that excitement quickly subsided the more I watched of Luke...now Han is dead, Luke is dead, Carrie is dead so no more Leia, and if they ever bring Billy Dee Williams back, I suspect they'll kill Lando off too...hell, they even got Ackbar.

I could've even lived with Disney magic if they'd gotten Snoke and Luke right and delivered on at least a couple mysteries in a satisfactory way. I can take Carrie Poppins. I can take the Holdo/Ackbar misstep. I can take the SJW scenes with Rose. I can take the awkward humor. I can take the silly primary plot and the holes therein. I can even take walrus tits, nesting porgs and reptile nuns. If they'd just delivered even a passable version of Luke and a satisfactory direction with Snoke and given us a couple decent answer's to TFA's mysteries, my whole perspective on the movie would be different.
