I found an article yesterday that beautifully illustrates the marvels of science: Sadly, due to our misapplication of science to human problems, our time to explore these marvels may be extremely brief.

This article might illustrate the idea of the thread’s title – We once thought sience would solve these problems. Due to issues of “faith,” what progress it has made is now being threatened. 7/15/20 I was lately reminded of an ad from my youth that had forcefully confronted me with the value of wildlife. Researching, I learned it was put out by the Wilderness Society. I also found what looks like the narrative, which I thought would work well here: – From Montana Outdoors 1975 archive.org/stream/montanaoutdoors611975mont/montanaoutdoors611975mont_djvu.txt

The whole point of science should be to serve human interests. Science is only useful insofar as it does that.

The whole point of science should be to serve human interests. Science is only useful insofar as it does that. I think the OP was trying to say that the failure to properly apply science for the betterment of humanity will lead to our destruction.

The whole point of science should be to serve human interests. Science is only useful insofar as it does that. Can you give an example of scientific research that doesn't serve anybody's interests, though? Presumably, any scientific research must be serving the interests of at least the people doing the research, so it would be serving human interests.

I'd agree that any science that is done is by its very nature serving interests (except if you want to get really creative with some thought experiments). Its certainly metaphysically conceivable that there could be science that has not been done that would not serve human interests. I don't think any exists though, I cant think of anything off the top of my head.

Much scientific knowledge both helps and harms humanity. Atomic theory for instance, has provided us many boons, and killed vast numbers of people.

I have written earlier on how research and knowledge are insufficient without a belief system that features the need for, among other things, evidence-based, rational dialogue. At the time, someone suggested empiricism would be a starting place. However, I believe the limits of that system have been reached.
