The musical numbers in AN AMERICAN IN PARIS are good but unmemorable... except for the finale, which is memorable in a bad way. I was impressed with the way Gene Kelly mixed ballet (his passion) with the musical genre in other movies. However, mixing isn't the same as incorporating. This self-indulgent finale is 15-20 minutes of pure ballet. JERRY MULLIGAN & LISE BOUVIER (the protagonists) as people as well as their romance are as boring as a prom without someone spiking the punch. He makes a huge effort to woo her before even getting to know her. This means that he was being driven by her beauty, which is weird since the gorgeous Leslie Caron was given an anti-makeover (she doesn't look attractive). 5/10 ------------------------------------- You can read comments of other movies in my blog (in English, in Spanish or in Italian).

I did not care for this movie. I haven't watched it in a long time but I don't think my opinion would change. You have to be a fan of that style of Gene kelly kind of musicals.

Although I have thought it to be overrated since the first time I saw it many decades ago, I do think it is a good film. I rated it 8/10. But I still wonder how it won the Academy Award for Best Picture as multiple entries the year of release year were better in my opinion. As for the physical appearance of Leslie Caron in this...I thought she was cute as a button.

It has been speculated that AAIP won because two of the other nominees (A Streetcar Named Desire and A Place In The Sun) split the vote.
But my own opinion is to remember that at this time Hollywood studios were panicking because audiences were staying home watching that newfangled contraption, television. The business model for luring people back to theaters became giving them color, spectacle, wide-screen vistas, and a bigger, longer experience. Of the five nominees for Best Picture, the only film other than "American/Paris" that met that model was "Quo Vadis." The other three were heavy dramas in black and white. (The fifth title that has been unmentioned so far was "Decision Before Dawn.")
