Most people remember WINGS for being the 1st Best Picture Oscar winner and for its groundbreaking flight scenes, but I'll remember it for the drama. Don't get me wrong. To this day, the flight scenes are a marvel to watch, but they become repetitive and they make the movie feel longer than necessary. The love triangle (or square?) started as something contrived, but it quickly turned into something touching. The friendship conflicts are well-handled with the use of juxtaposition and foreshadowing. Not even Charles "Buddy" Rogers' weak performance could ruin this. Meanwhile, Clara Bow's performance is great. Look, I know that JACK & DAVID's kiss wasn't romantic; that it was a goodbye between 2 friends... but... friends don't do that. Men, at least. And I'm pretty sure men were a lot more machos back then. Even if I'm wrong about this, did they have to hold each other like that? There's no way director William A. Wellman couldn't see how this would be perceived. One would think that JACK would be devastated after discovering the letter and that SYLVIA didn't love him would be devastating but, instead, he goes after MARY. It looks like he's using her as a rebound, but it's supposed to be a happy ending. 6/10 ------------------------------------- You can read comments of other movies in my blog (in English, in Spanish or in Italian).

It's too bad this type of war film isn't made often anymore. I actually enjoyed that one called Flyboys with James Franco. Remember that? Yeah again, the romance was unnecessary but the dogfights were thrilling and the camaraderie was on target.
