Darth Vader is unequivocally probably one of the greatest cinematic villains in film history. And the 80s and 90s certainly had some good ones as well from different films, but the 2000s and 2010s haven't had a great number of cinematic villains. A few off the top of my head are Heath Ledger's Joker, Denzel Washington from Training Day (Saw it recently, a fuckin' good film), Bill Nighy's Davy Jones from Pirates (Still the best CGI I've ever seen), Anton Chigurh from No Country For Old Men etc... But I think Thanos, considering he has been built up for 10years (something that really hasn't been done before) now and they finally pay it off in IW and really deliver, gave us a dark, complex and somewhat tragic performance that really puts him up there with Darth Vader in terms of a great cinematic villain that will really stand the test of time. Maybe it's a little early because the recognition of Vader really comes from Empire Strikes Back, so if Brolin can definitely deliver an even more powerful performance than Part 1, I would definitely put him above Vader as the greatest movie villain of all time

Technically no. I don't think the world will be seeing many kids this September carrying Thanos lunchboxes to school. It's 2018 & Vader swag like that still makes a killing.

I think he could be more like sidious. He’s respected as a great villain with a complicated story, and is a force to be reckoned with, utterly destroying the heroes, but he doesn’t have that super merchandising coolness.

Nah I wouldn't think so. Probably at the time people wouldn't have thought Darth Vader would have stayed iconic for 40 years but I find it hard to imagine any villain being the next Darth Vader.
Someone above mentioned the lunch boxes. I imagine lots of kids wore Darth Vader Halloween costumes. I don't see that happening for Thanos.
He was a good character. Probably just as good or even a little better than Darth Vader as of just A New Hope but no I can't see it.

Yeah what bluemorph said. Thanos has a better chance at being the next Darth Sidous. Vader is more likely going to be a long running champ of villains.
Still being the next Darth Sidous isn't a bad thing. Sidous is a great villain in his own right.
Despite what the anti prequels dipshits have to say.

No, just no.
He is no Palpatine either, in lack of a clever plan and because he will lose.
He seems not even as iconic as secondary SW-villains such as Boba Fett or Darth Maul.
On Ranker Thanos has currently risen to place 77 of Best Movie Villains of all Times, behind the named villains or Loki.
He is just a better MCU CGI-villain with a notoriously fallacious plan. That's good enough.

No.
Thanos is barely an interesting villain and his plan was lacking.

Ultron, Thanos and Zemo are way better than Vader in my opinion.
