“Purpose is but a slave to memory…” – Shakespeare I saw an article this morning about work UCLA researchers are doing on transferred memories. I think it speaks to what FilmFlaneur wrote recently about historical context. I thought I’d end this post with one of my favorite songs, one that expresses my feelings about treasured memories:

It would've been a much better play if Hamlet fucked Yorick's empty eye socket. Shakespeare really missed a great opportunity.

Jordan Peterson seems to be repackaging the old Abrahamic idea of a perfect, omnipotent God in emergentist terms. I think this attempt, while attacking rival narratives with the term, “Postmodern neo-Marxism,” is the newest use of the strategy of appropriating more attractive aspects of new ideas to oppose them – in this case, to foreclose on the vital concepts that these ideas imply. I wrote a blog entry a few years ago that describes the process Peterson is employing, so I’ll post it here.

Despite my objections expressed above to Old Sam Vine’s video (apologies for the flippant tone of the article I posted here) I did watch the whole thing and found some of what Peterson said interesting – especially his assertion about the importance of symbolism in government. It reminded me of an article I saw about a year ago. Apparently, a twelve-year-old girl had discovered a pattern in US elections a few years earlier, a pattern that Trump’s election continued.) Could this explain why conservatives and their “values” have dominated our politics for most of our history, the history I had discussed in my other Shakespeare-inspired thread? Perhaps if we took more time to examine our symbols we could at least catch up with other Western countries in the many areas, such as health care, where we have fallen behind them.

Maybe to get us up to speed we need to show things from the Dickensian perspective.
