What are some of your favourite non-classic/non-iconic (Alien, Godzilla, Gremlins etc) looking monster creations? Pumpkinhead (1988) The Angry Red Planet (1959) Tremors (1990) House (1986) Q - The Winged Serpent (1982) The Strangeness (1985) Jeepers Creepers (2001)

Love ur choices lostinlimbo especially the inclusion of the rat/bat spider creature from The angry Red Planet! A few of mine: The Monster that Challenged the World The Triffids from Day of the Triffids Tarantula (1955) The brain sucking creatures from Fiend without a Face (1958) The Flesh Eaters (1964), hardly visible but oh so dangerous

johanwow I can't believe I forgot about The Monster that Challenged the World. It's one of the best looking monster designs of its period. As for The Angry Red Planet. I have to admit I think the film is so-so, but that rat/bat spider creature has never left my mind. Creepy stuff. Cool to see the triffids there. Have you seen 80's and 00's mini-series versions? Nice choices profondorosso. The creatures from The Descent are just as effective looking outside of the shadows, as they are lurking in them. Never seen Feast, but I remember the poster artwork for it. Quite a nasty, imposing looking design.

How can anyone leave this guy out? “Brrr, scary, kids! You may be too scaaaared if you put on your 3D glasses, available from this television program for only fourteen payments of $9.99!”Also, only slightly more seriously: And a genuine favorite make-up design: Along with the Karloff Frankenstein make-up, of course. Jack Pierce’s design was amazing.

No one has mentioned The Thing That's because The Thing is a classic and iconic movie monster, and the parameters were non-classic/non-iconic movie monsters.

Rawhead Rex is not a good movie, and its monster is a very poorly executed special effect, with a design that doesn't match the tone or look of the film otherwise in any way.
But the design itself is actually kind of cool.

No one has mentioned The Thing That's because The Thing is a classic and iconic movie monster, and the parameters were non-classic/non-iconic movie monsters. The Thing is four or five different 'Things' that were never on film before, and in some cases, since. The film is a classic, the 'Things' ate rather unique.

The Thing from Another World and Carpenter's The Thing are iconic films with classic looks of their respective creatures in the forms that are seen. The psuedo remake prequel thing that came out, I can't imagine would register for most people on this topic. I think I might have responded to your comment, but honestly I don't really know what you were saying.

The psuedo remake prequel thing that came out, I can't imagine would register for most people on this topic. I think I might have responded to your comment, but honestly I don't really know what you were saying. I'm not so sure the Thing had an iconic look. The Thing from Another World creature isn't particularly iconic like say a Freddy, or a Jason, or a Chucky, or a Xenomorph, or Frankenstein's monster, where even people unfamiliar with the films would still have an idea about them just through pop culture osmosis. He kinda looks like a bad Roger Corman monster, to be honest. As for the The Thing (1982), the Thing does have some iconic forms-- namely the head spider-- but the terror of the Thing is its ability to mimic and not knowing what horrible forms it can turn itself into. It's more than a bit inspired by the shoggoth from At the Mountains of Madness (which likely had a hand in inspiring Who Goes There?) and much of the terror comes from the unknown capabilities of the creature and the uncanny ways in which it can imitate others, even humans. It's deeply unsettling. But is it iconic in terms of monster design? I don't think so, personally. The Thing defies an iconic design because its mutability and shapelessness are the terror.
