They burned to death in an accident when an electrical short ignited the cabin of the capsule during a test, and the nylon they had previously been concerned about, of which their straps were made of, but some one forgot to follow up on, melted to such a degree, the crew were fused to their seats. 馃檹

Through much of European history both sides in the wars prayed. They couldn't both win, could they?
But you might have found something really big, huh? Don't forget to be logical now.

The Soviets simply pretended their dead guys either didn't die horrible deaths, or simply did not exist, and what manned missions and Salyut modules shooting at disused Russian satellites with a 23mm gun?

Just posing for others to see them and think they were praying. Perhaps they were praying to die. Unhappy in their marriages. Afraid some dark secret in their private affairs would soon be discovered. Perhaps they were praying that if they were going to die, it be swift and essentially painless--not a years-long battle with excruciatingly painful cancer, amputations, impotence, failed medical procedures, depression. Perhaps they were praying for a successful mission and a safe return to Earth, but God ignored their prayers and granted their souls immediate embrace into the Kingdom of Heaven and everlasting joy.

Any war where Britain wins is obviously a positive reaction to the correct prayers. Praying for other Eurotrash is on par with drinking the blood of sacrificed virgin girls while giving the Goat of Mendes a Nazi salute.

All things being equal, the simplest explanation is the best one. There is no god to pray to. If there was one, he clearly doesn鈥檛 give a shit!

All things being equal, the simplest explanation is the best one. "Best" is entirely subjective. Apart from that--in the study of natural phenomena, Occam's razor is generally axiomatic, but what basis do you have for applying it to matters involving God?

All things being equal, the simplest explanation is the best one. "Best" is entirely subjective. Best = logical, rational, reasonable, less idiotic. Take your pick! Apart from that--in the study of natural phenomena, Occam's razor is generally axiomatic, but what basis do you have for applying it to matters involving God? Why wouldn鈥檛 I? The question is, what basis do you have for the assumption of God in the first place with no evidence? And what basis do you have for the assumption that he answers prayers when the evidence would seem to contradict it?

Fake News. The picture is really the crew praying that the NASA Cafeteria isn't serving burritos (with refried beans) before the Astronauts enter the space capsule.

There's actually an excellent audio recording (and now, I guess, a film, although I've only listened to the audio) by comedian Julia Sweeney called "God said, Ha!". In it, Sweeney, who grew up in a Catholic family, describes how she gradually became an atheist.
