I mean, it just barely made $166 million on opening weekend. That’s honestly pretty terrible, all things considered. Considering that by 2016, we already had three movies open north of $200 million, you would think that a movie starring Batman and Superman would at least be able to clear $180 million.
I also don’t buy the argument that reviews hurt the movie’s opening weekend performance. Word of mouth doesn’t impact a movie until after people go out and see it. Even if BvS had the best reviews of any movie ever made, I still have trouble imagining that it would’ve done much better on opening weekend.
While we’re at it, I don’t think BvS ever had a chance in hell of crossing a billion. There’s no way word of mouth could’ve cost the film an additional $130 million. I don’t think people give a shit about Batman, despite what people like Bruce Timm and Frank Miller would have you believe.

Actually I would say word of mouth had a pretty big impact.
If you look at it more specifically, BvS had an opening day of $81 million.
That's higher than Black Panther and a smidge higher than The Avengers and a smidge lower than Jurassic World and both of those movies had the opening weekend record.
But it's overall weekend was notably lower because of how steep it declined on the Saturday and Sunday.
It probably would have opened over $200 million if it had the same level of quality as those movies but people didn't like it.

I think the steep decline had more to do with the fact that the film was released over Easter weekend than anything else.

Opening it on Good Friday because "Superman is Jesus lol" was rather tasteless and the analogy is boneheaded.

Opening it on Good Friday because "Superman is Jesus lol" was rather tasteless and the analogy is boneheaded. The movie wasn’t originally supposed to open that day. It was initially supposed to open in July 2015, then it got moved to May 2016, and when it was revealed that the third Captain America movie would also be released that day, they decided to move it up to the end of March.
