It kinda irked me that after all the development that Thor got in Ragnarok, realizing that his power came from inside him and finally getting full control of it without the need for Mjolnir, he then goes searching for another weapon in Infinity War because "he's not strong enough". And to be honest asides from controlling the Bifrost and flight, none of the powers he displayed once he had Strombringer seemed any more spectacular than what he could have done post Ragnarok. Well, other than also cutting up Thanos. Still, it did seem to cheapen all of the development he received at Ragnarok.
Anyway, a faaaar better explanation would have been that since Odin has died, the Odinforce has now transferred to Thor but since he's new to the power he can't quite control it yet without a conduit, much like he couldn't fully control his lightning powers before without Mjolnir. So in comes Stormbreaker, which allows him to focus and tap into a small part of the Odinforce. Then at least it's more believable that he's able to injure Thanos instead of simply giving him the mcguffin-weapon. Oh, and they can also make his hair white after using Odinforce, that would have been cool.

Can odinforce be transferred? It transfers to the rightful ruler of Asgard after the previous wielder passes away. At least that's how it was in the comics.
