Warner Bros. is looking to expand on Jared Leto’s version of the Joker, which debuted in 2016’s “Suicide Squad,” with a movie of his own.
Sources tell Variety that Leto is set to star and exec produce an untitled standalone film, paving the way for future movies branching from “Suicide Squad.”
Plot details are currently unknown, but the studio’s idea is to expand on the world created by “Suicide Squad” and tie into future installments of that property. Warner Bros. already announced that Margot Robbie’s version of Harley Quinn would be getting her own movie with a “Birds of Prey” feature, and the next goal was setting up a film for Leto’s Joker.
When Warner Bros. announced last fall that it was developing a Joker origin tale from Todd Phillips, the studio emphasized that this did not mean the end for Leto’s Joker. Rather, Phillips’ film would fall under a new origins banner that would be separate from the current cinematic DC universe. This new banner would allow multiple actors and versions based on the same character with no overlap, and WB has already tapped Joaquin Phoenix to star in Phillips’ Joker pic.
Leto’s Joker, as fans noted, was almost a glorified cameo in “Suicide Squad.” The Oscar-winner had made it clear following the film’s release that he hoped to expand on the character in future films in a more substantive, if not starring, role.
It’s currently unknown when this film would go into production, as Leto and the studio will now search for a writer. It’s also unclear if this film would shoot before or after the previously announced sequel to “Suicide Squad,” which is believed to go into production sometime in 2019.

And he deserves it. Having two separate Joker movies is weird to me though.

You beat me to it.
UGH and now this... Jared Leto Joker standalone.
Lets see... There have been rumors of:
1) Suicide Squad 2 with Joker and Harley Quinn returning 2) Harley Quinn solo 3) Gotham City Sirens starring Harley Quinn 4) Birds of Prey starring Harley Quinn 5) Joker and Harley Quinn 6) A separate universe solo Joker (most likely starring Joaquin Phoenix) 7) and now a Jared Leto version solo Joker And don't forget 8) THE Bat Man
Not to mention ALL the other DCEU movies they hope to make... Flash(point?), Cyborg, Green Lantern (corps?)...
Personally, I consider ALLLLLLL of these movies to be in development limbo. The only things I can say are for sure are- Aquaman Shazam and Wonder Woman 2 because they are in some form of actual production. The rest? I'll believe it when I see it.
I hate to say it, because I love my DC characters, but DCEU look like they DONT (oops) know what the fuck they're doing. Rein it in, streamline, focus, I mean WTF?

Not everything needs to be a linear cinematic universe. I welcome these independent movies.

I'm one of the few who liked Leto's Joker so I hope this movie really happens, but I'll believe it's real only when they start shooting. WB has no idea what the hell they are doing and keeps vomiting out new project announcements seemingly just to keep DC in the news while the MCU grabs all the attention, money, and critical praise.

I have no problem with this movie idea, BUT, take a breathe DCEU! Stop announcing random movies every other week. Wait until you have a few more successful movies. Focus on Aquaman, Shazam, and WW2 right now. You look like you are just spinning.

Not everything needs to be a linear cinematic universe. I welcome these independent movies. Fair enough, but do it with characters we really do not know or don't have the brand and popularity like Batman. But also, why though is Jared Leto getting one?? His Joker was divisive as it is with most hating it. So why is he deserving of it? Secondly, you completely undermine the character by not only making him the "hero/protagonist" of the story, but it takes away the mystery as well of the character, which has always been a focal point of the Joker. DC needs to move on from the Joker.

I love the character as much as the next DC fan but there's other villains that they can do. They're just barely scratching the surface. There's almost half a dozen Clay Faces yet none of them appeared in a live action movie before.

I know I’m sounding like a broken record at this point, but they need to move away from all their Batman related characters.

I've said this about having a type of small time running gag villain that wants to be bigger than he is in each of the Spider-man movies that he can defeat. Kinda like Scarecrow in the Nolan movies. I think DC can do that with a small time villain, but instead of the hero defeating him each movie, just have 1 movie from his perspective. One of the Z list villains. I don't know, I might be thinking of an episode from a Batman animated series that had a meek henchman that got powers.
