Prometheus grossed
$126 million domestically $403 million worldwide
I'm not sure if it was considered a bit of a disappointment in the US but worldwide it did quite well especially by franchise standards.
Now we've got a new Alien movie...Will it be more or less successful?
It's an actual Alien movie this time around with the Xenomorph in it which is a plus. People were sorta mixed on Prometheus though so I don't know if that will hurt it.
But it is getting a lot of attention with the trailer getting a lot of views.
I would say it probably will make more but not significantly more. I could see it doing around the $400 million region again.

Excellent question and the answer is probably YES because people will want to see where the franchise is going to head and did not see the first one in the theaters.
$126 million domestically is not that hard to beat and the Global Figure.
It will all come down to the positive early reviews, to really gain the needed momentum.

50/50 chance. Even if it does, I don't see it pulling Deadpool numbers. It might do as well as The Martian.

I think with "Alien" in the title, it will attract more viewers.

Movie was a financial disappointment, it may not even make half of $400 million to be honest.

Budget $97 million[6] Box office $178.7 million[6]
So it is rather even making a minus.
Ghost in the Shell had similar numbers and is said to make a loss of 60 million.
