EVEN though they ARE the two MOST-POPULAR of the classic tv Westerns. I find them both DULL and BORING compared to the others. I MUCH PREFER: 'Have Gun - Will Travel', 'Cheyenne', 'Maverick', 'Yancy Derringer', 'The Iron Horse', 'The Virginian', 'Wagon Train', 'The Rifleman', 'The Big Valley', 'Lawman', 'Wanted: Dead or Alive', 'Kung Fu', 'Cimarron Strip', 'The Range Rider', 'Branded', 'The Guns of Will Sonnet', 'The Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp', 'Sugarfoot' and 'Bat Masterson.

LOL I never cared for either. I may have watched an episode or two of Gumsmoke but for the life of me do not remember watching Bonanza.
I watched Have Gun-Will Travel, Maverick, the Rifleman, Alias Smith and Jones, and Kung Fu.

I was a big Bonanza fan when I was younger. Never saw Gunsmoke.

Bonanza was a "family western," originally on Sunday night-- so action was limited. Really like Little House on the Prairie, another "warm family drama," which I could not stand. Bonanza had a great theme, though.
Gunsmoke I watched when it was a half hour. When it went to an hour it became more drama than western action and I lost interest. Every hour episode I watched seemed padded with "human interest"
Both shows I thought were more "soap opera on the range" than western.

I was a big fan of the hour long black and white Gunsmoke, was never a fan of Bonanza, which had "girlie show" written all over it, as westerns, so dominant back then on the small screen, often felt the need to expand beyond the male viewer, man or boy. So they added animals, mostly dogs and horses. Boys like them, too, of course but girls watched Fury, Lassie and Rin Tin-Tin primarily for the animals. The hour long near epic Wagon Train also had galfans, as it featured romance and some cute guys.
Over the years I've given Bonanza a second chance in reruns, and it featured some well written dramatic episodes which were real character studies, so as an adult my opinion of the show has risen somewhat. It seemed to lose much of its dramatic edge when Adam left and Michael Landon's Little Joe became a teen idol; and then Michael Landon turned to directing as well. At this point Bonanza became, for me, wholly unwatchable.

I'm not a fan of Westerns, with the exception of Have Gun, Will Travel. Are you a fan of Daniel Boone (even though it's technically not a Western since it took place in Kentucky and was in an earlier era, it did have some similar elements).

No, but I have seen some episodes. I don't dislike it like I do 'G' and 'B', just not a fan. 'YD' taking place in New Orleans ISN'T exactly a Western either, BUT I do like it.

'Have Gun - Will Travel' IS my favorite Western tv-series. Cheyenne Bodie (played by the late Clint Walker) from 'Cheyenne' IS my favorite tv cowboy.

Gunsmoke was not one I watched until recently. Now I understand why it was popular. B&W episodes are generally better, but Ken Curtis did make the color episodes memorable.
Bonanza I liked as a kid, and now it just seems a little too sugary and trite. Many episodes do the same thing over again basically.
