I only saw it now, and have to say I was pleasantly surprised.
I get the hate. Its a challenging movie to like. If you are a guy, I doubt you could relate or not as much.
And if you are a girl, and sitll didnt enjoy it my guess would be that you are not into it because you are either
A] much worse looking than Schumer and will feel upset that she is playing a role of a girl that is so disgusted by herself, like many reviews say "when she is not even That Fat and Ugly".
or
B] much better looking and that way you might not really relate to her feelings as described in the movie
or
C] so confident -regardless of your looks- that you find the notion of someone struggling so much with their looks ridicolous/not relatable.
but if you are about average looking like she is, or dont need to project yourself into a movie to like it, this might be a perfect movie for you. she does describe the average female experience in it quite well. a lot of the reviews were saying that she is anti feminist because she insinuates that an average woman must get a brain injury in order to like herself. i feel like those reviewers didnt really get the point. she was commenting on how much pressure there is on women today that even an average woman like herself can feel so super inadequate and overlooked that it may be very easy to feel disgusting/invisible etc.
and if you take the theme away i think it was still quite enjoyable movie, maybe even funnier and easier to watch than Train-wreck / which was smarter, yes, but this was not a boring movie.
My score would be 7/10. And not for the theme but for the overall experience. And judging by my theatre, I wasnt the only one who frequently laughed. I recommend it.
Any men here who saw it? I would be especially interested in hearing an opinion from a guy on this movie.
