Somehow I doubt the aids epidemic is going to be anything more than a backdrop in the movie.

1984 was a decisive moment in the Cold War. Escalating armament efforts on both sides were rising to a fever pitch. It makes sense that the Amazons would be compelled to intervene in a conflict that could mean the complete destruction of the entire planet.

A real life supervillain trying to take over the planet is less important than preventing something that's unlikely to happen anyway?

Wonder Woman is too loud a character to participate in the Cold War and no one knows about it.

Agreed, the whole idea of her being active throughout history since WWI without anyone really knowing about it is problematic to say the least. She should be the equivalent of the First Avenger.

She is... Or are you talking the time between Wonder Woman and Man of Steel. The problem with Man of Steel is that they make it look like Superman is the 1st. Then in BvS and Suicide Squad they act like heroes have been around. I think Man of Steel should have established that he was: Just make it that Superman was something more special than the others. Even Iron Man threw out that there were more superheroes out there. Everyone shouldn't have appeared/got powers when Superman showed himself. Now they have to find ways to hide all the heroes when doing period pieces.

Yep. Now they're kind of stuck with having to do elaborate retcons for all period pieces.
