Does that mean we won't be seeing you around anymore, President Ackbar? Hee hee hee...
I'm done with indiscriminately watching comic book movies --- especially those featuring characters I never gave a shit about and will likely never give a shit about.

There's nothing silly about a man with spider powers, a big purple alien with a magic glove and a God-Man with a magical hammer that shoots lightning!
It's called embracing the wondrousness-ness.
Innit?

I edited the part about silly and stupid. Don't want to insult anyone. I may be Evil now, but I 'm not an asshole!

I took a long leave of absence from collecting comic books and recently got back into it. I'm glad I didn't give up on it altogether. The medium is still insanely problematic and formulaic but, the heart wants what the heart wants.

In all seriousness, I know exactly what you mean, Mr Ackbar. My taste in movies has evolved quite a bit. I used to love action movies. Now, action is my least favorite part of any movie. Without a good story/characters I can no longer get any enjoyment out of it.
I just rewatched the Lord of the Rings trilogy. And while I still loved it and rank amongst my all time favorite films... I found the action/battles (which were once my favorite parts) kind of boring.
Even watching Infinity War, I was like "I get it. Doctor Strange has a lot of powers. Get back to the story!" Meanwhile every one else in the theater was like "Awesome! Look at all the kewl heroes fighting Thanoos! OMG! Hashtag Awesome sauce!"

I agree completely, and, at the risk of sounding like a "CGI hater" I will say the problem is even worse nowadays. It can be very difficult sitting through some of the cartoony, overwhelming, fake-as-fuck action scenes. LotR3 was always my least favorite, for that very reason. Don't even get me started on the Hobbit. I once re-edited the Prequels, and removed ALL of the CGI action scene bullshit, leaving only human-on-human action. It was still boring, though, because the writing and acting was still shit.

Well I always thought one of the best action scenes in these superhero movies was the chase sequence in The Dark Knight which ended with them flipping the truck.
Which might sound trivial compared to what you usually see in these kind of movies but it was actually done for real.

Infinity War had way too much and really affected my enjoyment of it. Return of the King is my least favorite too because it relies on the big battle in Gondor more than anything else. Meanwhile Fellowship (my favorite) is a straight up quest story that focuses on the characters and the fantasy world building instead of big action pieces. I've always wanted to do a similar edit with The Hobbit movies, but making it coherent while cutting stuff out would be too much of a challenge. Phantom Menace was always my favorite prequel because it looks the least cartoony of the three. Also, in regards to comic movies I reccomend you try going back to some of the older ones. I recently went back and watched Spiderman 2 for the first time in years and absolutely loved it more than ever because it is A) more focused on character/story and B) has excellent action with minimal CGi. At the risk of incurring the wrath of my fellow MCU fans I have to say that it's still the best Marvel movie ever made by far in my opinion.

I love the action in TDK because there's no cgi (as far as I can tell anyway). I know that cgi is needed to do bigger, more fantastical sequences, but I think smaller scale is sometimes better for this very reason. My favorite action sequence in the MCU is the airport battle in Civil War. There's a lot of reasons why but chief among them are the real location, lack of green screen, and minimal cgi that is used seamlessly and only when needed.

Yeah people give Phantom Menace a lot of flak but most of the locations in the movies did appear to be real man made sets. When you do from that to Attack of the Clones which had places like Genosha then was cleared green screen. That's probably aged worse. Revenge of the Sith had that issue too but it wasn't as bad as in Attack of the Clones.

I'm not a big fan of the prequels, but I do find myself drawn back to TPM occasionally because the special FX have actually aged remarkably well and the use of real sets and miniatures really helped that. On a side note, do movies even use miniatures anymore? It doesn't look like it, which is a shame because I still think they're superior to CG.

CGI doesn't register with me anymore unless it's really bad. The quality of the storytelling and whether or not I am entertained are my main concerns. The presence of CGI in a movie isn't going to impair my enjoyment unless it is used like MoS or The Battle of the Five Armies.
