As is my wont, I agree completely with my fishy friends, President Ackbar™ and @forceghostackbar. I’m not a big action fan myself, though at times nothing-but-action, if done right (which is very rare—maybe just Die Hard?), can be fun. I was thinking about that because Taken was on; it’s a silly sort of blow-it-up movie, but I kinda liked it. I also agree with @forceghostackbar that Spider-Man 2 is by and far the best Marvel movie of them all (though Iron Man comes close). That’s probably anathema to say here, though. And I really don’t like CGI, by and large. It definitely can be used well, but it provides filmmakers the opportunity to make movies even worse, far phonier-looking. In superhero movies, in particular, I’m bored wildly by the CGI-explosion climax, which seems like the same old cut-and-paste explosion sequence over—and over—and over. Compare that to, say, The Rocketeer (which has a very exciting, large-in-execution but small-in-detail climax—few explosions), and the difference is remarkable. (By the way, I’m a fan of miniatures as well, Ghost Ackbar.) I still do like superheroes, but I feel like I’ve taken a break from superhero flicks for a while now anyway—I hadn’t seen many new ones at all until I started posting on these boards! Either way, I suppose I don’t actively go seeking for genres as much as I do just for good movies of any genre. I’ll probably see a few more Marvel flicks one of these days, but they’re certainly not a priority. (That’s for when I can get —well, with any luck, the two original versions of Star Wars sequels so that I can finally complete the “Salzmank Watches Star Wars” thread!) And, of course, whatever may be on TCM that piques my interest. Classic-movie guy more than anything. I digress. Anyhoo, I know completely what you mean, President Ackbar™—but here’s looking forward to more jokes and fun times (which is mostly why I’m here anyway!).

These be dangerous words here, old friend. Words of treason they are! And the ears have walls! Weird Raptor may be listening... Come at once! To the secret lair! We will discuss the supremacy of Spiderman 2 in safety!

There really is no (legal) way to get them now. You may as well watch the special editions. Just make sure you read up on all of the changes so that you know what was and wasn't originally there.

Ah, I thought Primemovermithrax Pejorative had implied that we could see them. OK. That stinks, @forceghostackbar … Oh, well, will do [keep track of the changes, that is]. But I’m looking forward to The Empire Strikes Back.

But I’m looking forward to The Empire Strikes Back. There is a fan made remaster of them, but downloading it isn't exactly legal. I doubt anyone would ever get in trouble for getting it, but personally I'm always leery of that sort of thing and wouldn't risk it.

It would be a really bad idea to watch the SE versions! You only have one shot at the first viewing. I wouldnt blow it!
The changes are significant--not just additional scenes but alterations to dialogue and voices.

Get an internet blocker thingee or download it from a library. Anything but dont miss out on the original version. The restoration is really good. The guy who did it was hired professionally as a result.

CGI doesn't register with me anymore unless it's really bad. The quality of the storytelling and whether or not I am entertained are my main concerns. The presence of CGI in a movie isn't going to impair my enjoyment unless it is used like MoS or The Battle of the Five Armies. What about GotG 2? It's a movie I do like, maybe even a bit more than the first in terms of story- but it's such CGI overload. Especially act three when EVERYTHING is CGi.

Salzmank You could get them by using dropbox and peer to peer sharing. That way you avoid the torrent sites. Just need someone to privately message you and offer to send them. The ones I watched were HUGE files though-hopefully they have made them less so now.

The two most impressive comic book superhero movies I have seen are Superman and Robocop (though not really based on a true comic it felt very much like an R-rated comic book movie story).
Masters of the Universe did a good job with some of its comic book elements--I dont think any villain character has come close to matching Frank Langella.
After that, I think Darkman had a lot of comic booky feel to it, but it was hampered by a not so serious approach to the character (sympathy undermined by comedy).
Iron Man had some good parts-especially thanks to RDJ and Jeff Bridges and a story that was cinema-friendly, but it also had problems that persist to this day with the MCU films. I.e. unmemorable FX sequences. When Iron Man catches the falling pilot, it was over in about 4 seconds. If that same scene was done in the 70s or even around the time of the Rocketeer, it would have lasted considerably longer so the audience can appreciate being up in the air. There was no sense of wonder.
The last superhero comic book movie I would consider well made was the Wolverine 2013--but I find it hard to consider a superhero movie since it didnt involve costumed characters. The FX scenes were well done, they fit the story, there was dramatic tension and minimal humor. Not one I am anxious to re-watch but compared to the MCU films it is much more old fashioned.
I bailed on the MCU films after Avengers 2. I'll probably check out Ant Man and Civil War at some point.
The trailers are so shitty for these movies too. They all have the same piano tinkles and high school amateur theatre dialogue recitals.

Btw that Luke scene is completely appropriate for this thread. In my opinion it's what's missing in so many comic book movies: real emotion.
That climax isn't about action or special FX, it's about the pure epic emotionally charged breaking point of our hero as he faces down his own father. One of the best movie moments ever.
I'm not saying all comic movies lack moments like these (Civil War has a powerful climactic battle for example) but most do.
