The Infinity Stones or the Mother Boxes?
DC fans, you'll have to forgive me if I have absolutely no clue what the MB's are supposed to be or do in the context of the DCEU. They appear to have multiple random powers that help move the plot along at specific intervals. The Infinity Jelly Beans are guilty of this to a lesser degree but, let's look a little closer at these Mutha Boxes.
Mother Boxes can: * Resurrect the dead * Terraform worlds (specifically into "hells scapes") * Fuse biological life with machine life * Provide unlimited energy * Make pretty Disney-style multi-colored fauna

Mother Boxes were god awful! The most uninspiring, undefined set of Macguffins in the genre.

Mother Boxes were god awful! The most uninspiring, undefined set of Macguffins in the genre. Yep, it literally does this to your planet if you stop the "Unity" mid process. ...then the Justice League will stare at the devastation in a self-congratulatory manner. Somebody needs to get a rake and some extraterrestrial weed killer.

The IG had a proper explanation behind it. The infinity stones each had distinctive abilities that were showcased and (somewhat) explained in the movie.
I have no idea what the motherboxes were for and how they did what they did.

The Infinity Stones but only because the MCU did a bang up job of setting them up and explaining their nature from the get-go. Mother Boxes could have been made far more interesting than they were in Justice League.
They derive their power from The Source (DC was never really good at naming their magical knickknacks and doohickeys) which one could identify as the DC equivalent of the Force from Star Wars. As a result, their capabilities are nearly limitless, only barred by the imagination of whoever's using one. What the movie doesn't convey is that they're actually sentient to some capacity and are loyal to their user. So think of it as a supercomputer, a genie, and your pet dog combined.
As bonkers as that is, all we end up with are these black boxes that might as well have been the suitcase from Pulp Fiction.

Steppenwolf does treat the Mother Boxes as if they might be sentient. He talks to them but, they never respond which makes him seem crazy. The Mother Boxes of the source material, of which I am very familiar with, are a completely different animal than what was shown in the movie.

Remember the 'Unite the Seven' marketing for JL? Who was the seventh member? Lois Lane?

Remember the 'Unite the Seven' marketing for JL? Who was the seventh member? Lois Lane? Confusingly enough, that's actually supposedly marketing meant more so for Aquaman the movie. Seven seas, seven underwater kingdoms that Arthur Curry is tasked with uniting. Or so Entertainment Weekly told me.

They clearly had plans to include another hero but things changed by the time the film got made. Unite the Seven seas? That has nothing to do with the Justice League, they're just retconning a marketing gaffe.

Infinity Stones, because they all have a variety of characteristics that have been shown and explained to us throughout the MCU, and we have also seen what they can really do, (thanks Infinity War) so we know just how powerful they really are.

You were right the first time: They're both just McGuffins. Hee hee hee...

Well... perhaps... it might speak to the idea that DC/WB should have tried to develop their McGuffin more thoroughly over the course of several movies. Hee hee hee...

Marvel will always benefit from the fact that they started their shared universe first.

Okay, I'll humbly and respectfully give you that. You're right. But I think we can agree that if the Mother Boxes were closer to how they are in the source material, we wouldn't be having this discussion right now. We might even be saying that the Mother Boxes are a far more fully realized McGuffin than the MCU Infinity Stones.

I'm not that familiar with them but I thought the idea seemed good but the execution was not.
They could have set that up as a sort of Infinity Stones wannabe. Maybe had one of the Motherboxes appear in Aquaman, another in Wonder Woman 2 and then the third could have been in whatever and it would have led up to a Justice League movie with Darkseid or something.
Oh well.

The Infinity Stones were the better MacGuffin. They explained the mythos behind them, and they were spread out throughout the course of several films where they was at least a proper explanation for their individual power. The Mother Boxes were mostly contained in just one film aside from the deleted scene in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. I didn't think the flashback was enough to explain their power.

Only Superman. And I think it only ignited the codex in his body to bring him back.
