I read the books and enjoyed (outside of their handling of Stannis, the Blackfish, and Ser Barristan) watching how they adapted it for HBO.
I also enjoy period pieces, fantasy, and shows with a rich history/characters/stories. GRRM, despite what others may say, is a genius. It's a shame he decides to screw around instead of releasing the next book...oh well. It's too late now as Roy Dotrice (who did the narration for the audiobooks) passed away last year. It wouldn't be the same for me without him.

I no longer do because it's turned to crap I picked up Season 1 cheap on DVD out of pure curiosity for some medieval story. I looked up the description of it on Amazon and was put off by the announced fantasy character about funny seasons but the rest looked worth it, so I risked the 13€. I stayed for the intrigue, the politics and characters. I dropped off in S6 because it had become insultingly stupid.

I dropped off in S6 because it had become insultingly stupid. Sadly they're just interested in pandering to the audience now. They need truckloads of money just to feed the stupid beasts. GRRM's an idiot. He should have made it about lions instead of ever-growing lizards.

I remember my first interactions with Game of Thrones. While browsing an adult site I landed on a scene featuring Ros. I have always loved medieval or period movies such as Ben-Hur, Spartacus and Robin Hood etc. So I became a bit inquisitive after seeing the costumes of the characters. Still, I did not start watching it. I would even abuse people who watched it. Then after a few years I finally decided to give it a try. Now when Ned Stark executed the deserter I was convinced that this is my show. I never looked back. I completed the first 50 episodes of the show in a matter 73 hours. That's right. 50 episodes in 3 days! On advice of Marv I started reading the books and finished them quickly.

Same reason I watch anything. Interesting story, interesting characters. It all stems from there.
