bloody-disgusting.com/movie/3505418/5-horror-movie-remakes-stephen-king-praised-years/I completely agree with SK on all these, It was a beautiful movie, and I expected only the worse when I heard "it" was coming. Dawn of the Dead is a great reimagining of the classic original. Different, but in a good way. Halloween was a deadly serious version of Carpenter's movie, no pussyfootin' around! Last House on the Left (along with The Hills Have Eyes) are two remakes that never got the proper respect, both are excellent. The Hitcher was very well done, and they made it their own, which I appreciated.

Hitcher was watchable, but not great.
Dawn of the Dead was entertaining but highly over-rated. A Romero remake as popcorn fodder doesn't really sit well with me.
Rob's Halloween was a muddled, stupid mess.
Last House and Hills were both solid remakes.
I don't consider It to be a remake, but it's pretty damn great just the same.

I think the only modern remake I'd go to bat for is TCM 2003. It's a vastly different experience from the original, but was pretty damn harrowing and engrossing when I saw it in theaters. Film really had me by the balls for most of its run-time.
Then again, it's probably been ten years or so since I last watched it. I might have to give it another look and see if I still feel the same.

For me, Rob's HALLOWEEN is probably the worst Horror remake in many many years - though his HALLOWEEN 2 is a worthy rival.
I thought it was atrociously written, shot, edited and acted, with some of the worst dialogue ever heard in the century-plus history of film.
Directed with all the subtlety of a JCB, Rob here crashes from one scene to the next with little or no finesse, cramming his vulgar obsessions with profanity, rape, barbarism, low-life trash and sweaty long-haired rednecks down our throat til we practically gag on them.
I didn't notice any scares, I didn't feel any suspense. No craft, no technique, no mastery of the art of cinema. Just a nauseous overuse of the shaky cam complimented by jarring rapid editing.
Add to the mix a plethora of loud, loathsome characters who make you root for Myers, an abundance of mindless brutality and a hulking, hobo Myers........a Human Myers - who somehow still seems oblivious to bullets, knives and any shape of injury.
The result: Nothing more than Rob, once again wallowing in his familiar, sleazy comfort zone of tedious hillbilly lowlifes crawling from the cracks of society's seedy underbelly.
From about 5 minutes in, I felt a sinking feeling in my stomach that got steadily worse, creating a knot that sat there as the film progressed.
I wasn't scared. I wasn't shocked. I wasn't entertained.
Sadly I was numbed by a sense of boredom and disbelief that arrested me long before the merciful roll of the closing credits.

Interesting, thanks. I'm perhaps more critical of the glut of remakes but I find some are entertaining.

Dawn of the Dead was good. But what's so great about it? Did I miss something? Maybe I need to watch it again.
At that time, I really liked The Hitcher and watched it twice. Liked the music in it too.
Now I don't want to miss The Last House on the Left. I'm pretty sure I'll watch it sometime.
Halloween doesn't interest me.
It seems like a kid's movie. Is it entertaining for adults like me who've never watched and cared much for the original?

It seems like a kid's movie. Is it entertaining for adults like me who've never watched and cared much for the original? It's not a kids movie, even though it has kids as main characters. It's more horrific than the original and the clown is genuinely unsettling, every time he's on screen.

The Hills Have Eyes and Last House On The Left are both terrific remakes. I have a strong inclination towards LHOTL though, because this one pretty much scores in all departments and makes itself it's own film as well. Hills was brutal and unrelenting, like Last House remake, but I have such a fondness for Craven's original Hills, that I can't think of it as an improvement. I like the gritty and raw look of the original. Craven's Last House original, is hit and miss for me. Zombie attempted to do something a bit different with his Halloween, but this is where he failed to my eyes. He took the enigma and mystique away from Myers and I find the film is far too ugly and unappealing, to be anything but a parody of Carpenter's classic. However, I absolutely loved his sequel. This became his own film, to his own turgid remake and he scores big time with his atmosphere, performances and directorial skill. The Hitcher remake was solid enough I suppose, it just wasn't in the league of the original. It replaced suspense and atmosphere with graphic violence to compensate for it's shortcomings. Never liked Snyder's Dawn remake and don't even care to own it. IT was over-hyped and I found it to be a bit flat and contrived in parts, without any real anchor. I realize it is only half a film, so until I see chapter two, I will reserve any informed criticism until then. I found the kids annoying and unappealing as heck. I actually own all five movies on DVD. I don't have The Hills Have Eyes though. That remake was vastly superior to the original, IMHO.

I wonder what SK will have to say about the 2018 Halloween reboot/resequel?

Thanks for sharing. I agree with some of his choices here and I wasn't a big fan of Rob Zombie's 'Halloween' remake especially 'The Hills Have Eyes' and 'Last House On The Left' which I liked even more than the original movies but the two Horror remakes I liked the most which he left out are 'The Texas Chainsaw Massacre' and 'The Ring.'

I thought the Hitcher was just awful. Barely could finish it.

I know that you didn't mean this specifically, but remakes or adaptations of his work have recently been stellar. Gone are the days with the made-for-TV movie quality. I'm not just talking about IT. Castle Rock, 11-22-63, 1922, and Gerald's Game are all great.

I watched all of them during the 2000s and these were the remakes of American horror that I rated a pass,
the Texas chainsaw massacre (2003) dawn of the dead (2004) the last house on the left (2009) the crazies (2010) piranha (2010)
