The Andy Griffith Show was an American situation comedy which aired on CBS from October 3, 1960, to April 1, 1968. Spin-offs derived from the show included Gomer Pyle, USMC and Mayberry RFD. Andy Griffith (Sheriff Andy Taylor) was the titular main character but the true star was Don Knotts as the neurotic deputy sheriff Barney Fife. When Griffith left the show it was rebranded as Mayberry RFD, which lasted until 1971. Ken Berry was a fine actor but the new show was, to me at least, a pale imitation of the real thing. In my opinion the show could have been revived in 1972 with new actors, something completely fresh. Who would I cast for the roles? For the lead role of Sheriff Andy Taylor we'd need somebody with warmth and simple dignity. James Olson (born 1930) would be the ideal choice. Could anybody replace Don Knotts as Barney Fife? Yes, and it would be Michael Sarazzin, born May 22, 1940. For the part of Aunt Bee Taylor there would be only one actress with sufficient stature for the role. Yep, it's Virginia Gregg. I figure 9 year old (in 1972) Brad Pitt would be perfect for the role of Opie Taylor and Willian Conrad could play some role. What do you think?
