While I’ve always been of the opinion that TDKR is a perfectly fine film, save for a couple of goofy scenes, I figured this question was worth asking. Let’s say that the first part would be titled The Dark Knight Returns, while the second part would be Rises, and that the first film would cover everything up until Bane takes over Gotham, while the second part would cover everything after that, with a lot of additional material added in for both parts, including more Batman scenes. Would people here have preferred that?

That'd have been too long and convoluted for its own sake.

That's actually not half-bad of an idea. For instance, the first part would start with Bane defeating Batman in the backbreaker scene. And the second part would start after that moment from here on out.
And I agree 100% about the titles for those parts (Returns for Part 1 and Rises for Part 2).

Hmm. My first thought was "no" because that film already feels bloated, but then I started thinking about the comics. If the first part was Batman and getting his back broken and all that, and the second part was him training Joseph Gordin-Levitt in a Jean-Paul Valley kinda role, I'd be down.

One terrible movie was enough.

Nope.
The evil plot made no sense, and I doubt stretching it out would have improved on things.

Leave it to Nolan to go with Bane. Classic overthinker. I know! I'll go with the villain nobody wanted or asked for! I'll show them! I'll show everyone! And fart. That said, it's not terrible. You can tell how bad a movie is based on its re-watchability. And it's totally re-watchable. I don’t see how you can say that nobody wanted Bane. The only other live action incarnation of him at the time was the version from Batman & Robin, so he wasn’t exactly a character who had been done justice in the past.

If I remember correctly, and I do, the internet at the time was resoundingly pro Riddler. It was practically assumed. It was too perfect a choice. And I remember the reaction when Bane was announced. There was a lot of head scratching. The Nolan version of The Riddler could have been truly terrifying. I was hearing talk of a large scale version of the Zodiac Killer. Instead we got a mercenary with a pointless plan that even if it had succeeded would have accomplished exactly nothing.

There was a lot of head scratching. I also remember there having been a lot of people assuming that the movie would go for the Riddler, but I’d argue that would’ve been too predictable a choice. While I was certainly surprised when Bane was announced as the villain, that was mostly because I didn’t think Nolan would go for a relatively unrealistic villain like that. In hindsight, though, I’m glad he didn’t go with the Riddler. I think that would’ve been too similar to the Joker.

Definitely not. The movie was long enough as it is.
What it should have been is Part 4, not part 3.

It shouldn't be called The Dark Knight Returns unless it's based on The Dark Knight Returns.

I've been saying so for years now, despite its run time a lot of things fell short to me and I think Nolan was a bit too ambitious trying to blend The Dark Knight Returns, Knightfall, and No Man's Land into a singular narrative, a two-parter probably would've done all three more justice than they were.
