Did you prefer the "First Edition" (1E) or The "Second Edition" (2E)?
Did you enjoy collecting the cards, playing the game, or both?
I started collecting the cards in the early days of the game, around 1995/1996. I missed the limited edition black border premiere, but did start collecting when the white border set was available. I tried to collect most of the cards and sets after that. I've never had them all, and I still don't have many from the later sets...
I tried playing the game a couple of times, but I never really enjoyed it. I just prefered to collect them. Much like collecting football or baseballs cards. It was always fun opening a pack and finally getting those rare cards that I needed. And I would almost freak out when an Ultra Rare card would end up in my possession.
I found that it was best to buy a starter pack, since it was a tad cheaper over all. You usually got 3 rare cards in that one, instead of the one rare card in the expansion pack... Buying random packs meant you frequently got duplicates too... However, whenever I could, I tried to buy a box. Buying a box resulted in getting few duplicates and a wider variety of rare cards. And you got the nice sheet of rules too.
I was able to get most of the rare cards, and several of the Ultra Rare ones, even the Future Enterprise card. Yes, I do have that one... Somewhere (Sadly I put it somewhere, where I can't find it...)
I also purchased the Fajo Collection when it came out. Just a very cool set. Two of my favorites were "Locutus Of Borg" & "Spot"!
I know that the Second Edition was an attempt to fix the bloat the First Edition had... What started out as just a few affiliations, and card types, became many and made playing the game difficult with all the constant rule updates and complexity.
When the Second Edition came around, I found that I didn't like the design of the cards as much, and I think there were too many of the same types of cards... Too many Picards, too many Enterprises. It lost some of the appeal that the First Edition had.
Sure the First Edition had more than one card of "Picard" too, but there was a good reason for them. The first for the Enterprise D. The second for the Enterprise E... and so on. But the First Edition was not flooded with them.
I was still glad though that some of the Second Edition cards were still compatible with the First Edition. As the TV Shows * Movies continued, that at least allowed for increased gameplay possibilities for the First Edition. Even thought I didn't like to play, it was still nice to have that option. However, I didn't understand why some cards were not First Edition compatible. Many that were not, looked just like ones that were...
When Star Trek Enterprise was on the air, I was very happy when Decipher made a special release of First Edition cards for that TV Series. I have that set.
I was disappointed when I heard that Decipher was no longer going to make card sets. But at that time, Star Trek had gone off the air, and movies were not being made, So I guess they figured the constant source material for their cards made continuing the game difficult...
But I know there are still fans out there that love the game, and they even still make their own cards to continue and enhance the game...
I loved the Borg Enterprise E Card, based on Star Trek: First Contact, that I saw once that was done by one of those groups.
Good Times.
Remember the "Barbering" Skill? LOL!
