At the end of season 5 episode 8 when Jon Snow and the Nightwatch and Free people, who decided to join them, were escaping from the Spirit Walker zombies --- they were not rowing. They were just sitting there. Good thing zombies can't swim.

They were just sitting there. Good thing zombies can't swim. They call them Wights on Game of Thrones. Wights and White Walkers are different, by the way. Wights are the undead. White Walkers are an actual race. They really didn't have to worry because the Night's King was controlling them - they weren't going after them because he (the Night's King) didn't want them to do that. For whatever reason, he wanted Jon to escape and go back feeling hopeless/lost.

There have been obvious warnings of this all along, starting with the man of the Night's Watch allowed to escape in the Prologue, but idiots, Jon included, want to believe they are facing an invading force.

They still couldn't reach the boat if it's just a couple of meters deep.

Don't read what I'm about to write in response to Leo until you've finished all the seasons. SPOILER... SPOILER.... The wights actually can float (as bodies naturally float in water). If you remember when Jon and co. go to get the Wight beyond The Wall, Wights fall into the water when the ice breaks and they don't sink. In fact, they start trying to pull one of the group into the water. I can't remember really who it is at this point...but I think it was the Hound that they try to pull into the water.

Yes, I guess they float when they need to and can't when they shouldn't. There's a spoiler button on the far right of the formatting bar. That's in one of the seasons where nothing makes sense any more and the Night King knows of a chain shop right around the corner, right?
