Winter Classic looked nice, yet the fad needs to dial itself back. Not to mention for the love of gawd, invite different teams. Mitch Marner, 6th in NHL scoring... not going to the All Star game. Auston Matthews, captaining his first NHL squad - the Atlantic team. I would still make Morgan Rielly the Leafs captain. Having each team represented does a disservice to everyone. Especially to Brad Marchand and Patrice Bergeron, apparently. Got to make sure the smelly Sens get a couple, right? 🤔

Leafs are beaten by the Avs by 3 at home and the fans boo Gardiner? I mean he did look awful getting muscled away on one of Soderberg's goals but Kadri is in a big goal scoring slump and had his pocket picked on another Avs goal. And what's Nylander done since he finally got signed? With his speed and skill he should be creating chances for himself or teammates like Marner does. Oh and Tavares was -4 last night.

I feel like the Blue Jackets have just been destroying teams ever since Tortorella called them a bunch of part-timers.

Flyers in last place in the Metropolitan. Firing the GM and Coach weeks back really has created that 'spark' to light a fire under them They've got the 2nd least points in the entire NHL right now.......... That being said - that probably just means they're only about a 3 game winning streak away from making a run at the 7th or 8th seed in the playoffs in today's NHL

"The Process" or whatever it was called-- that's what the Flyers will do too maybe?

Satisfying Leaf win on the road over league leading Tampa. Kadri with a great game breaks his goal scoring drought. Matthews barely noticeable and Nylander even less.

That new contract isn't looking too good, especially considering what they're going to have to pay Marner come summer. Marner reached the 60 point mark tonight for the 3rd time.

The Flyers have been in 'Process' mode since 1975 If the Flyers had chosen the right goalies at the right time, they'd have had at least 3 cups since then. It's such a strange phenomenon yet I believe true: certain sports franchises (perhaps most) have eternally historic position strengths & weaknesses, as much as traditional game plans that can never die. Had the Chicago Bears had Randy Moss & Steve Young in their primes, they'd still have run the ball too much & thrown money at the D.

You can say that about any NHL team though - same as saying if they had the proper top line defensemen.
Same with NFL and QBs, NBA and PGs, MLB with pitchers.....
I remember when they got 'Beezer' I thought he was the missing component - used to stand on his head with the Panthers and used to be a brick wall vs. the Flyers.
They changed coaches, GMS numerous times, turned rosters over.
Personally I think today's NHL needs an overhaul (1 pt for an OT loss garbage and extended divisions) - but the roster does a bit too - Giroux (even though he kind of rejuvenated his career when the took him off Center and put him at Wing), Simmonds, just get rid of the vets and roll with Hart and young defensemen - it's been since 2010 and their magical playoff run that they've been even remotely interesting - that's pretty much a decade of boredom - sadly we're reaching that with the Phils after a 4-5 year epic run.
I find it fascinating how the 'Cult' can continue to support them and this product of the NHL though.

A deeper less sexy dive is some Canadian talking heads mentioning Seattle, & how already the league's goaltending depth is a passable concern. I for one think maybe that's backdoor answer to low scoring - having 8-12 starters who'd otherwise be playing the AHL or KHL letting in more goals. Simmonds will be traded, he's been power ranked the best trade option for weeks now. Do Americans pay attention to that stuff? It's mostly on Canadian sites. Toronto won that goalie round btw signing CuJo. The Leafs recent tradition has been go go offense & leave the goalie to fend for himself on 40+ shots a night. Jake Gardiner was openly booed this week at home. Meh. The team couldn't care less, when you look at his stats no less. Babs has never ever let up on Jake's ice time. If he looks soft on 1-2x plays, Babcock still sees him cycling the puck up & out like a champ on a shift to shift basis.

Years
It was either the Michael Richards or Jeff Carter trade I believe eons ago now when they acquired him.
They've done jack for years with him.
Richards and Carter went on to win Cups. That's not placing blame on Simmonds but he's supposed to be one of the leaders here like Giroux. Turn the whole thing over if you're rolling with Hart in goal and these young defensemen - after you've axed the GM and Coach - gotta be a month now and they're still floundering in last place.
Turn it over.
Used to enjoy the Legion of Doom vs. Sundin and Cujo - but they didn't (neither one for that matter) win squat.

Orange and Black with a 3 game winning streak - most of the season. Tied for 3rd fewest points in the NHL with a handful of other teams - which probably means they're like 3 wins away from a playoff seed

Oilers finally fire Peter Chiarelli. Seems good - until you remember the group responsible for replacing him.

Game of the year candidate tonight with the Sharks beating the Caps 7-6 in OT. Evander Kane scores with one second left to send game to overtime.
Ovechkin with a hat trick, Tomas Hertl wirh hat trick for Sharks. Hertl is also first Sharkie ever to get a hat trick with an overtime goal.
Sharks got themselves a real good team, a real tough playoff opponent. I'm not a big fan of Martin Jones in goal, though.

Lost their 7th straight game, this time to the Leafs 6-3 and gave up another hat trick, this time to Kadri who also got an assist. Nylander broke out of his offensive slump with 3 helpers while Matthews scored his first goal in a while.

That does it. I wasn't going to but now I'm going to keep one sick day from work for the parade in June.
