Justice Department Approves Disney’s Acquisition of 21st Century Fox With Divestiture of Regional Sports Networks

Disney has agreed to sell off 21st Century Fox’s 22 regional sports networks to secure Justice Department approval of its acquisition of major 21st Century Fox assets. The DOJ’s sign off on the $71.3 billion transaction on Wednesday gives Disney a big leg up over rival Comcast in the battle to acquire the major portion of Rupert Murdoch’s TV and film empire.

The Justice Department on Wednesday filed a complaint in federal court seeking to block Disney from acquiring 22 regional sports networks but announced a settlement agreement with Disney that calls for the divestitures. Anti-trust chief Makan Delrahim and other DOJ officials argued that Disney’s ownership of the national sports powerhouse ESPN created anti-competitive conflicts if it were to also acquire Fox’s regional channels, which serve some 61 million subscribers around the country.

Was he running out of money? You may as well complain about anyone who's ever bought ad time on his networks, worked in any capacity on any of those shows, or paid to see any Fox studio movie in theaters. Add cable subscribers to your list while you're at it.

I see your point, but you have to let it go. The guy was going to continue to make money and be an asshole whether Disney bought the studio or not, at least the small upside for us is better X-Men and FF films.

Here's the thing, the property they are selling is worth that much. The IP and Back Catalog for 85 years is worth quite a bit. Don't forget the tv stations and their 33% stock in HULU. They wanted to sell, they would've gotten the money from some entity. I guess we could quibble on if some other entity would've given them 50 billion to 80 billion. Murdoch was going to get paid regardless. Once we step over that hurdle it just boils down to who should get Fox.

Let us just give thanks that they are selling in one big chunk. If they played the long game and sold pieces here and their then they would've got more money. Not just selling parts of the studio and channels but IP.

Yeah it's bitter sweet. I only hear about Rupert how is the rest of his family? I say that because Rupert is like 90. I don't wish death on anyone, but he's up there.

I understand your frustration, brother. These are indeed dark times.

The Murdochs already have all of the lobbies they need in their pocket - and not just in the US government. Thier influence is, and will continue to be, global.

I think we both know the truth. The great American experiment is failing. The middle class is dead and gone - it's a smash and grab. Steal what you can, kill the poor and make for the hills with the loot. The only law is self-preservation because survival never goes out of style.

Your concerns about the Murdoch's expanding influence and wealth is akin to worrying about a hangnail while being caught in an acid rain storm. The Murdoch's will gain not even a controlling share in Disney, some corporate-welfare-based debt relief and some cash to help them make new friends.

In short, they won't gain much more than what they already have or had. This is a lateral move for the masters of the universe. The air is very thin up where they reside.

But fear not, here is the new rule of law.
