Would that be good or bad for the long term popularity of James Bond?

Good because now the former colonies can each take their turn to portray James Bond. We'd get an Australian, a Canadian, an Indian, a Kenyan, a Nigerian, a New Zealander, a South African, etc. to play the part now.
