We had a mini family reunion today. Sister in law's family came down along with a few of my cousins, nieces and nephew. When the kids were small I would watch them. I was the fun Uncle and Cousin. i let them stay up late, I would encourage them to eat as much sugar as they possibly could, etc. The adults started sharing stories today. And I bring up the Adventures of Mark Twain Movie incident. The kids were young like 4-6 so they don't remember it. And their parents never knew about it. 90% of the movie is good wholesome claymation fun. At the time I forgot about the 10%. Shit that 10% fucked those kids up. Back in the day I put it on the tv and let them watch while I was doing something outside I forget what. I come back inside and these kids are bawling, hitching crying holding each other. It took a while to calm them down, but I did. None of the adults, today, new the movie and scene so chrome casted this video on the tv. It creeped everyone out and I got a whole lot of "what the hell, dude." and "what were you thinking"
If you haven't seen it. Here is The Adventures of Mark Twain the Mysterious Stranger scene...

I've never seen the movie but I know of that scene. It's infamous as something way too scary for kids being in a movie aimed at kids. I think that sort of thing builds character, though. And it was a story Mark Twain was batting around so it fits in. I think the scariest movie experiences for me as a kid were Gremlins and Ghostbusters. I must have been 4 or 5 at the time when I watched them. Neither one is aimed at kids but I don't think a lot of parents got the memo on that. I ended up loving both films but Gremlins gave me recurring nightmares and I was terrified there were Gremlins in the basement. A couple of scenes from Ghostbusters (in specific, the zombie cabbie and where the hands pop out of the armchair and grab Dana and she's dragged to the door) scared the crap out of me as a kid. I vaguely remember seeing it at a drive-in with my mom and a friend of hers and she said I spent most of the time hiding under a blanket but that afterwards, I could recite the film word-for-word. Good times!
