Thoughts?
I hated the first one, and this had some of the same problems - namely dumb characters. That is, until the last 30 minutes. Once those kicked in, this became a rare horror sequel that's 20 times better than the original. Great soundtrack, too.

I was never a fan of The Strangers. As much as I admired the skill, patience, and style with which it was shot, the thin premise and antagonists just kept getting thinner and less engaging as it went on... Even though I was really taken with the story in the beginning.
I'd heard this one was actually good, but mostly from people that loved the first one. It looked to me like it would be the first one all over again, but with a much more mainstream slashery approach. I can't believe I'm saying this, but that rote approach might actually be an improvement in this particular case.
On the other hand, the only aspect that I liked of the first was that it was deliberately paced and shot more like an art film than a slasher movie.
I'll give it a shot now, though.

Yeah? Turned the original off after 20 mins but could consider rewatching, and kinda want to see this.

This sequel seemed more indebted, ironically, to You're Next. Minus the comedic element. As for cinematography, I was less taken by the first one's than you. Seemed over-reliant on shaky cam. But the cinematography here, which I forgot to mention, is really nice. Reminded me of Argento at times.

There are some nice images, but it just grew dull after a while. Interesting that you say that about the camera work in the original. I haven't seen it in a long time, but that's not my memory of it at all. When I think of that movie I remember long, deliberate takes in stable medium and wide shots that made good use nice depth of field with forbidding foregrounds, focused middlegrounds, and ominous backgrounds. Maybe I'm only really remembering a few select shots, but those are the ones stuck out in my mind. I'd probably have to watch it again to confirm that, but I really have no desire to check it out again. The new one certainly does seem more colorful...

5/10 Basically just an OK slasher film. I like the use of music though.

Had intended to avoid the sequel as a result, but your comment here is making me reconsider.

I didn’t hate the first one (I do think it’s very overrated though), but I also thought this was better. I actually cared about the characters this time and it had a couple of satisfying moments. Not great by any means, but pretty enjoyable.

Just saw it. Again, so many unanswered questions. Is there no one else living at the trailer park besides the aunt and uncle? Why is there razor wire on top of the fence? Who are the three bad guys? What's their backstory? We don't know! I think that's the worst aspect of these films. I guess they're thinking it makes it more mysterious not knowing. Not really, it just makes a thin movie even thinner.
I agree about the cinematography in the second, and I was rooting for Bailee Madison. Didn't care about the rest of the family, and I'm not sure we're supposed to. Also, just me or is Pin Up useless? What's she done over the space of two movies? IIRC the other two are doing the lion's share of the terrorizing.

*spoilers*
I'm a bit shocked that basically all of the Strangers were killed. That clinches really any plans for future sequels. (Unless it's a prequel I guess) I'd be lying if it wasn't satisfying seeing the creeps get their just desserts.
I'm wondering if everyone else was killed off in the Trailer park. But it feels like a missed opportunity not to show that.
Also... Poor Bailee is having Post traumatic stress at the end. No freaking way he tracked them down to a Hospital, waltzed in with an axe, and killed off all the Staff and Security

But it didn't have the patience, the artistic eye, or the intriguing character drama set up of the first either, which are the qualities that I liked in a movie I otherwise didn't. But it had a few nicely staged set pieces and its own look, and some surprising moments. I didn't expect for them to kill off the only known star so soon or for all the killers to get offed. I also didnt expect the killers to be unmasked as much as they were, which really didn't work for me at all. Ultimately it was mediocre, like the first but in different ways.

What do you mean by "artistic eye"? And I didn't care for the "character drana" set up of the previous one. Seemed like an excuse to not give the characters personalities.

Decent sequel. I was expecting much worse. It's a lot like the first one: same masked villains, no real motive for their actions, lots of jump scares. What's next, a prequel?
6/10

What sold this one was seeing the victims grow brains and kick the Strangers' asses. Prequels are the opposite of that.
If they did another one, I guess they could bring back sackhead. His fate was kinda ambiguous.

I really don't want a prequel either but I figure if there's another Strangers film it'll have to be a prequel since all three killers got killed in the second film. Of course, maybe you're right about sackhead surviving and maybe the girl killer (pin-up girl) who was stabbed miraculously survived too.
